Holy Mother Church traditionally allows priest to offer three Christmas Masses if they are offered at the correct times (although today pastoral need can authorize a priest to offer three Mass at any time on Christmas, even if they are all during the day). I always have questions as to the “correct times”:
(1) “Midnight” Mass (In Nativitate Domini ad Primam Missam In Nocte): Does this have to be at 12 midnight, or can it be later in the night, before dawn? Could I, for example, be the subdeacon at the 12:00 Midnight Mass at my parish (yes, we are having one!) and then offer a private Mass afterward since we are still in nocte?
(2) “Mass at Dawn” (Ad Secundam Missam In Aurora): When exactly is dawn? Is it the time between first light and sunrise? Is it at sunrise? I have the 8 AM Mass, and sunrise is at about 7:30 AM where I am, so I think that should clearly be a Mass During the Day, right?
Official Church rulings (e.g., S.R.C.) are appreciated.
Thanks,
Fr. Boyd
