Who were the three men that appeared to Abraham in Genesis 18?

Opinions vary. Some understand three angels. Others understand the Lord, one of the three divine persons, especially the Son, and two angels.

This is from a letter by the USCCB (US Council of Catholic Bishops) on the topic of immigrant rights:

Even in the harsh stories of migration, God is present, revealing himself. Abraham stepped out in faith to respond to God’s call (Gn 12:1). He and Sarah extended bounteous hospitality to three strangers who were actually a manifestation of the Lord, and this became a paradigm for the response to strangers of Abraham’s descendants.

Since this letter was written and agreed upon by all the US bishops, I’d think they know what they’re talking about!

Has the church ever changed doctrine or dogma and what is the difference between the two?

Hmmm… so they say our LORD became 3 people?

No, the LORD appeared* in a manifestation *as three people, but He wasn’t three people really.

Another example would be the burning bush. The LORD appeared in a manifestation as the burning bush, but He wasn’t the burning bush really.

No, no doctrine has changed.

Dogma is a higher degree of authority than doctrine, but both are authoritative and must be believed by Catholics.

My brother and I have been having discussions on this subject. I would like to e-mail your response to him, how can I do that?

Depends on your definition of “changed.” Doctrine changes in the sense that it develops, becomes clearer, more defined but not in the sense that later doctrine completely contradicts earlier doctrine.
