“Planet” in ancient Greek actually meant “wanderer” because it appeared to be a star that moved amongst the field of stars. So if the star stopped as we are told, that merely meant the planet(i.e. wandering star) stopped in the field of stars.

Sure it does. Planets can move and slow down to what appears to be a stopping point and then retrograde. Its actually a common thing because we have our own independent orbits around the sun.
