Im wondering who else is a fan of Leno? I used to watch him with my grandmother, she would stay up just to catch the first part of his show every night it was on. I usually do tune in before I go to sleep and especially love his ‘headlines’. he is very talented and can make anything funny.

Im also a bit envious of his incredible car collection!

I hate to say it, but once Jimmy Fallon takes over later this week, I wont be watching anymore, I dont think Fallon is all that funny. I also think the tonight show ratings will go way down, and Ive even heard a few people suggesting Leno will be back as host in Sept.

I was a bit upset when I saw a news article that Fallon had fired every crew member from the current Tonight Show, I was surprised by that, I dont think people will like that and will choose NOT to tune in.

Different strokes, I guess. I find Jimmy Fallon the least unfunny of the nighttime talk show hosts. I think, though, that the monologues are all universally bad. Craig Ferguson I used to find funny, but he seems to have gotten more tasteless in recent years.

Cite/link? I googled this but found nothing.

As I was introduced to the “Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson, all will fall short as the times and people’s attitudes change. Having viewed many substitutes and ultimately the choice of Jay Leno, I had no objections and he was good and funny in his early shows.
He, (likely at the direction of network, writers and crass/innuendo laden competition), seemed to change and steer downward to please the sex starved/scandal of the audience.🙂
Heavenly Father, have mercy on Johnny’s soul.

I thought his show was pretty funny. It’s something to watch when I can’t fall asleep. I also have a fond memory of staying up late redecorating my room with my mom with Jay Leno playing in the background making us laugh so hard. 🙂 I like Jimmy Fallon as well, so I guess I won’t mind the change that much, but it’s not like I was ever a regular watcher of the Tonight Show.

Never really watched Leno much. In college we used to watch Conan, back when he was on after Leno, but haven’t ever watched Fallon.

Me too - big JC fan! I used to really like Jay and much preferred him to Letterman since I felt Letterman’s humor was more often than not mean-spirited. But then Jay went down the “mean” path too and I stopped watching, except for an occasional guest, for years. I have tuned in to some of his goodbye shows and he seems to be mellow again.

IMHO, that honor will go to Seth Meyers when he takes over Fallon’s time slot.

Johnny Carson set the standard! I stopped being a regular watcher of late night shows after the Carson era although I did attend a live taping of the Leno show several years ago. I appreciated Jay’s humor in the early years but he eventually began to get stale. His show was stale the night I went to see him live. I don’t care for Fallon at all.

Let’s face it. The era of the great TV comic artists, both prime time and late night (e.g. Carol Burnett, Johnny Carson, Jonathan Winters, Tim Conway, Red Skelton) is over. Go to YouTube and look at the clips. These people were super creative and very, very, funny.

Amen! And let’s pray that along with an increase in faithful, zealous priests that we’ll also cultivate a generous supply of mindful and faithful artists, especially comedians as well.

I think this rumor maybe tied into the fact that Jay Leno did the show from Burbank and Jimmy Fallon will be doing the show from New York.

I used to watch Carson and then Leno, and Conan and Fallon with great regularity, back when I was addicted to Hollywood celebrity, and broadcast network television did not enrage me for its gross immorality. I have changed since then. I stopped watching Conan when he moved to cable, then I lost interest in Fallon for all his support of liberal causes since his SNL days. Then Leno was the last to go, and I’ll tell you why. I found other stuff on TV. For a while I put up with the disgusting American Dad because it was kind of funny. Then I found MeTV and I never looked back. MeTV has a ton of golden-oldie TV programming back from the days when Hollywood observed a slightly more respectable moral code. I really like The Untouchables and Star Trek and The Fugitive and things like that on MeTV. It’s a great thing to fall asleep to a program that will not disturb my concupiscence. I am done with Hollywood, it is just a question of weaning myself off all the hot young stars that I’ve come to like over the years. MeTV is a good consolation prize while I’m still craving some mindless entertainment.

I agree!

I actually like Jimmy, but probably won’t watch as often anymore, too.

Keep in mind, Fallon has had his own staff for the past 5 years. He is directly responsible for providing his employees a means to put food in front of their children.

Jimmy is just keeping his existing staff, as Jay did when he moved to 10PM briefly.

I’m going to miss Jay. I was a fan of his since he was doing stand-up. I was never a fan of Johnny’s, but I did like Leno doing the Tonight Show. My favs were Headlines, the 99¢ Store and Jaywalking. I started watching Late Night back in 2009 when Fallon became host. (At the time, I was sitting up all night with my sick, paralyzed German Shepherd, Benny.) At first, I didn’t like him, but he was still pretty raw. I think he’s great now. Very talented. He does wonderful impressions and can sing really well. But Jimmy’s demographic for Late Night is different–younger–than Jay’s, so my fear is that Jimmy will change his stuff to accommodate the earlier time slot. Hope it doesn’t happen.

And a shout-out to the late comic genius Steve Allen, without whom there would have been no Tonight Show at all… :clapping:

I’m old enough to remember Jack Parr and the time he left the show for saying the words “water closet”. (For those that don’t know a water closet is the part of a toilet that holds the reserve water). How times have changed.

I haven’t really watched much late night TV recently, but found Leno pretty funny. He dropped by my husband’s TV station newsroom years ago for an interview, and my husband said that you had to really be on your toes, he is so quick and sharp.

I’ve only occasionally watched Fallon. One of his writers (Mike DiCenzo, the “Mets Bucket Hat Guy”) was best man at a young friend’s wedding last year, and did one of his rapid-fire bits for his best man’s speech. Just amazing and hilarious. I felt badly for the lovely, earnest maid of honor who had to follow him… I wonder if he’ll show up on the Tonight Show.

Personally, I’m more of a Conan fan myself; he’s smart and not mean-spirited like the others. I grew up watching Letterman and found his antics funnier than Leno. My dad never thought Leno was trustworthy for some odd reason. I will admit that the Tonight Show under Leno was good for the first few years, but around 1998, IMO, it started going downhill.
I prefer more high-brow comedy. Jimmy Fallon took some time to get used to his role, and I think he’s doing a great job. I’m interested in seeing what Seth Myers will do. On a similar note, I’m a fan of Stephen Colbert and I love it when he interviews guests with opposing views, like atheists and anti-religion people.

I love Conan as well! Too bad he didn’t last long when he did have the Tonight Show. That said, I do have to say that a lot of Conan’s jokes and antics on his show are a bit too inappropriate sometimes, as they can get really perverted at times.

As for Jay Leno, I think he’s funny and a nice guy (at least that’s the impression I get for some reason). I used to watch him a lot during my high school days of not sleeping, lol.

IMO, The Tonight show has become a part of southern CA, but Jimmy falloon has always seemed to prefer NYC, so that is understandable.

Another thing I liked about Jay is you never heard of anything negative about him, gossip, or any such thing, he is one of the richest people in CA, and has managed to keep his private life private, I dont think Ive ever heard him mention is wife Mavis before, so I guess he does not like to always be in the spotlight like most celebs.

I will miss Jay leno. I have been watching The Tonight Show since the early 60’s I like the Headlines as they are very funny but liked the other stuff too. I do not think I will be watching Jimmy Fallon since the East Coast seems to have a different humor than the West Coast. At least it seems that way to me so what do I know?
