The tradition of the Angelus

At this shrine/church I went to for the Holy Day for the Assumption of Our Lady, yes at noon, the Angelus was recited before the 12 noon Mass began. It started when the bells rang for noon. I’ve never been to a church that did this until this week.

I know this is 4 months old, but I said I’d let you know, so I am. Yes, we recite the Angelus every day at noon at school.

My kids did this in elementary school and their High School does this too. The bells ring at my parish too at noon and 6pm (not sure about early morning).

I’m toying between instituting the Angelus at noon or a simplified daytime prayer from the one volume LOTH. The school has a chapel (which is more of a storeroom now) and I am going to make sure it gets used as a chapel daily.

The Angelus is so much more powerful if it is sung, which it sometimes is at churches in London.

What do you guys think? Angelus or noon prayer?

I would choose the Angelus. Why? It’s possible that some Catholics are not even aware of this beautiful tradition, so it would be great to teach this to a new generation of Catholics.

Also, it is the same and it doesn’t change, whereas the LOTH changes with the days. Do you have a morning prayer at the school? Maybe you can use the simplified LOTH for that?

I would go with the Angelus. Since it incorporates the Hail Mary, students will immediatey be able to join in. And the switch to the Regina Caeli for the Easter season is a nice tie in to the liturgical year. Both schools where my kids have been did the Angelus followed by the “Bless us our Lord” before lunch prayer. It was really moving to hear the kids voices saying the responses all up and down the halls.

My parish priest has said that we could do adoration once a month too.

We send our son to a summer camp that is run by the Archdiocese (of Detroit). The camp is Camp Sancta Maria.

They say a noon Angleus every day. All camp activities stop at noon and the staff and boys all recite the Angelus.

They also start the day with morning Mass before breakfast and end the day with a simplified Vespers.

you’re welcome. I love it so much. Everyone stops whatever they are doing at noon when the principal comes on to say the angelus. Then it’s back to work.

Yesterday we were walking back from the church after doing a “reverence practice” and the bells were ringing at 2. One of the girls asked me why and I said I thought they just rang every hour. Can anyone else think of a reason they would be ringing at 2?

Where I work, the church bells ring at noon; I can hear them from my office.

When I was teaching, everything stopped at noon and we prayed the Angelus together with someone leading over the loudspeaker.

I live in a barren area with regards to Christianity, let alone Catholicism. No bells are ever rung at all in this city except on Sunday, so far as I can tell.

This past Advent, a Franciscan priest made the only mention of the Angelus I have heard, before or since, in any Roman Catholic church. He strongly encouraged everyone present to live this devotion as a way to sanctify the day.

An earlier poster was debating whether to implement mid-day prayer or the Angelus. As both are rather short, why not pray both? The Angelus is a beautiful prayer, but the Divine Office is the prayer of the Church itself. With the holy sacrifice of the mass, the divine office is the perfect prayer of Christ offered to His Father, which the Church, the mystical body of Christ, makes Her own. There can be no greater prayer than the holy mass and the divine office (which really are one prayer - the one offering of the Church which drawings its grace and power from the eucharist). The Church strongly encourages the laity to participate in the divine office and in fact Vatican II encouraged all parishes to celebrate, at the very least, Sunday Vespers as a community. How many parishes do this?
Popular devotions, such as the Angelus, are wonderful, but they are not a substitution for the liturgy. We should be fostering both.

Prayed privately to myself, mid-day prayer, using the current Liturgy of the Hours, takes about 5 minutes…prayed vocally in a group would still be no more than 10.

Then in English, a man announced that it was noon and he asked that everyone stop what they were doing to pray the Angelus. He also asked that if it wasn’t your custom to pray the Angelus, to be respectful of other clients & employees who chose to take a minute to pray. He then prayed the the Angelus for everyone to hear & follow. I thought this was awesome!

amazing. Sometimes I am very sad that I don’t live in a predominately Catholic country. I love where I live, but things like that are so cool. Does anyone know if the Irish news still rings the Angelus at 6 pm?
