The Traditional Roman Mass - is it still somewhere?

I am a convert. Some 55 years ago I was Baptised in Corona, CA. While in the Air Force
I went with some buddies to several Catholic masses. When back in the States I went to
a large old Cathedral in San Juan Capistrano in Southern California. While in that Mass
I knew that something different was there. I knew a little Latin but the mystery of the Mass
strongly attracted me. Shortly an old Monsignior gave me instruction. The Latin Mass was the turning factor in pulling me into the Catholic church.

I haven’t attended a Latin - Tridentine Mass in over twenty five years.** I miss it.**
Does anyone else miss the Mass said in Latin? I know that the Tridentine mass is said in a few places.

Pope John Paul II did say he was not opposed to the Tridentine Mass. Why do we not have it now. Did the Liberal take over?

The Second Vatican Council declared the Mass of Paul VI (also known as the NO, or Novus Ordo Mass) to be the standard Mass to be celebrated by Priests of the Latin Rite. Now, our Holy Father Benedict XVI issued a letter called Summorum Pontificum which grants a greater ability to celebrate the Traditional Latin Mass in Parishes across the globe.

You sound like you are in the Diocese of San Diego, California. If so, there is the Tridentine Latin Mass said by the Fathers of the Priestly Fraternal Society of St. Peter (faithful to the Pope).

This Mass is at St. Anne Church, 621 Sicard St., San Diego. Phone: (619) 239-8253.

knowing he is acting in the place of Christ.and to be celebrated by Priests of the Latin Rite. there is the turpentine Latin Mass said by the Fathers of the Priestly Fraternal Society of St. Peter. is it that somewhere. thanks.

I attened the first Sunday of the month at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Raleigh, I’m sure there is also a location near you. On a personal level, I would recomend looking for a parish not independant from your local diocese, as to be sure you are meeting your Sunday obligations.

I think Mass according to the Tridentine form is celebrated pretty widely across the US; most dioceses seem to have one or two. I know in my own diocese (Buffalo, NY) there are two celebrated each Sunday at two different diocesan churches by diocesan priests.

The Society of St. Pius X also has a chapel here, although I believe they only offer Mass once a month, if I’ve heard correctly. No need for them, anyhow, in light of the two Latin Mass venues sponsored by the diocese: one in the city, one in the burbs.

The diocese used to actually celebrate the Tridentine Mass at the cathedral each week, but there weren’t enough attendees to justify such a large venue, so they transferred the celebration to a smaller church.

I’m glad the Holy See has expanded the permission for the celebration of the Extraordinary From (in contemporary parlance); it’s an enormous part of our liturgical heritage and is altogether worthy of preservation.

As of last May, when we were in San Juan Capistrano, the 8 AM Sunday Mass was the Traditional Latin Mass. This is not at the Basilica but in the Old Mission. The Norbertine Fathers from St. Michael’s Abbey provide the priest.

Ignatias20 (me) is not in San Diego. 40 years ago I was in the USAF at Riverside,CA.
That old church in Capistrano, takes me back to the 1500s. When you hear a mass there - you see something of a mystery… I love it.

I am located in Texas. I am 8 miles from the Mexican Border and 60 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico. Sometimes I attend mass at one of the very small Catholic churches right on the Rio Grande river. One of them was built in 1732. People say that in that old one the spirits of past priests still come around sometimes. I took a photograph of the Altar and it showed a translucent sphere floating on a side table. Was the size of a basket ball.
The Bishop said it was what is left over after a fervent prayer. He said that.🙂 😉 😃

Saint Peter the Apostle parish in Laredo, saint Jude Thaddeus parish in Pharr.

Yes, usually the priest is Fr. John Corona, O.Praem., but sometimes it’s someone else (one I went to was celebrated by the Abbot.)
