Yes, the TOL was necessary so that they would not die.
The Jewish commentary I’ve read pointed that out, and that death was one of the things God was referring to when He looked at everything and said that it was “good.”
The Catechism of the Catholic Church says that death was a result of sin, yes, because the result was A/E were expelled from Eden and blocked from the Tree of Life.
My uncle had major heart surgery today, and I was thinking about “life” in general. How much we love it, this gift which we have from God. I don’t know if we really love anything more in our physical existence than that, except for our faith and hope in God.
(Aside: recall that in Revelation, the martyrs “witnesses”] were those who did not love life so much that they should shrink from death.)
