Has anyone seen Terrence Malick’s masterpiece The Tree of Life?
He is a Christian, though I presume not a Catholic but I found the film fascinating and wondering what everyone else thought.

I loved this movie–I loved the feeling of peace that came with watching it and I loved the questions it asked, and in turn had me contemplating. I guess I liked that it asked the questions, but then I contemplated the questions within my own framework (being Catholic, my faith, my relationship with God).

I also liked the grand scenes (the creation of the universe for example) set alongside the narrative of the family because this is how we live: we have our very small world set inside the structures of earth but there also exists something much grander.

I purchased the movie but have about 20 min left of it. In general, I don’t find it all that interesting. Maybe I am missing the point or simply don’t understand it, but to me it seems largely boring, it follows no real thread of anything and the way every scene is finally arranged seems somewhat random.

That being said some of the scenes and landscapes shown were pretty nice to watch.

I saw the film about a week ago. It got me back in focus for Lent. (And actually, yes, I do think Malick is Catholic).

I found the film emotionally devastating (and after all, it is essentially a meditation on the book of Job), but also cathartic and filled with grace.

Amazing movie, in my estimation.

I have. It’s one of my favorite films.

I’m also surprised that the movie isn’t having much discussion here on CAF (did a search), but Noah (2014) is. Even when it was released it didn’t get much traffic here on CAF. What gives? People are totally fine with a bible story being bastardized in the name of entertainment (someone gave credit for Noah being pro-life … Like really?. Whoop-di-doo Noah didn’t kill the baby!) yet can’t give two hoots about a movie that is quite philosophical and abstract.
