How is it impossible for God to have Three Divine Persons that are One in Essence? If He’s God why should we question how He Manifests Himself and apply a human definition of ‘oneness’ upon Him and say the Trinity is impossible. How do Muslims feel about this?

How do Muslims feel about this?
shouldn’t Muslims understand it first? how will they understand it if it is misrepresnted in their book as 3 gods or God having partners or God having a wife?

That seems accurate but I’ve never read what the Quran says about the Trinity or the Nature of God for that matter. 🤷

Not positive for those who believe in the Trinity, that’s for sure. Ive read some of those verses before. But Ive forgotten them.

Muslims have a firm emphasis (it seems) that their religion is one of “pure monotheism”. I feel that this is because they see Christians as not having this belief.

it is true, Muslims simply don’t get the Trinity…

As a Muslims our belief is one of complete monotheism.

THERE IS ONLY ONE GOD, we live and die by this one ultimate belief and that submission to the one true God is the only path to salvation…

Many Muslims view Christians who believe in the Trinity as Polytheists (something which is very bad in Islam)

We see the christian belief that Jesus is God or Gods son as complete blasphemy, we don’t understand it, we don’t get why and how Jesus is the son of God OR God himself OR why God would want Jesus killed/punished/crucified, OR why Jesus’s death/pain would eradicate the sins of any other human…

Im sure this is a two way process where you feel the same about islam, but these are some of the main exceptions that Muslims have about Christianity/Trinity

Rayaan,

Tauhid mean unification.

Trinity is the Tawhid of Allah, His Word and His Spirit.

So Trinity is not about the number of God because the Trinity is about the One God.

The Word/Wisdom of God is not a partner to God. The Word of God is not another God. God and His Word/Wisdom is One God.

Polytheism is believing in many gods, or attributing to humans what is only for God according to Islam.

In Christianity we belive in One God, and we do not attribute divinity to Jesus "the man " because the Word of God who took flesh into Mary with no man needed is still the Divine Word of God. We attribute to Jesus what we attribute to the Word of God. No partners, no polytheism.

Even in Islam, the Word of Allah is eternal and uncreated. This is the teaching of the Trinity : One God, One Word, One Holy Spirit of God.

even Mohammad failed to grasp the concept of the Trinity. in the Quran he implied that Trinity consists of

God+Mary+Jesus
the Quran implies that Trinity is about 3 gods, about taking partners to God, about God having a wife and son ecc.

If the Quran presented it correctly, we wouldn’t have each and every Muslim telling us we make partners to God and we believe in 3 gods. This is why we have to explain to each and every Muslim who comes here.

Rayaan seems to be a decent person with whom you can have theological arguments. 🙂

God+Mary+Jesus
That is because muhammed based his writting (or stealing) of the quran on almost every Christian heresy known to man (and a few more) up until the 7th century.

Muslims seem to fail to utilized the ability to reason that God gave them. Their blind faith in the quran denies this gift. Faith and reason should never contradict. If it does then either your reason in flawed or your understanding of the faith is.

Most theologians believe that the concept of the Trinity is a revealed (and only reavealed) aspect of God. There is a proof for the existence of the Trinity that some theologians believe proves it by reason alone.
  1. God is Love
  2. Love is an action. The giving of oneself to another (i.e. Charity)
  3. Therefore God must have something to love.
  4. God can love us humans but we are finite and he is infinite so we can never receive God’s fully and vice versa He can never love us to his full capability. This is no fault of God’s but reflects our finite nature. An analogy is a man lovin a dog. He cannot love a dog to his fullest capability, he needs a woman for this. He needs an equal.
  5. Therefore God needs an equal enitity to love. By definition this entity must be equal (infinite) to God. This is the Son. The Son and the Father excahnge an infinite amount of love and love each other to their fullest capability. The Son was never created. He has existed as long as the Father has. They are co-equal,co-eternal and infinite.
6)One aspect of love is that it produces fruits. The fruit of the Father/Son love is the Holy Spirit. Yet the Holy Spririt is not a creature (created thing). It has always existed with the Father and Son. All 3 are co-equal and co-eternal. A human analogy to this is the family. Two equals, through love, create a 3rd all loving (ideally) eachother to their capacity. These three things are three separate persons with the same nature. This is not familiar to us in human terms becasue two separate humans (even twins) have two separate natures. You can think of the Tri-unity as three manifestations of the 1 God, especially thier interaction with us and our world.

All of the above describes an infinite being. Us finite human beings are unable to fully describe/understand an infinite being so we must speak in analogies. This is what makes it a mystery.

The Qur’an understands the Trinity just fine. The reason it says it is false is because it says Jesus is a human Prophet and not God, and that God is One in every possible way, and to don’t say ‘three’.

Also.
  1. The Qur’an never calls Christians polytheists, this is a lie.
  2. The Qur’an never says Christians believe in three gods, this is a lie
  3. The Qur’an never says the Trinity consists of God, Mary and Jesus, this is a lie.
  4. The Qur’an never refutes Christian doctrine by saying God doesn’t have a wife, this is a lie.
And anyone who resorts to making such claims doesn’t know what they’re talking about and should keep their mouth shut before they make Christians look like fools.

  1. 5:73 Those people who say that God is the third of three are defying [the truth]: there is only One God. If they persist in what they are saying, a painful punishment will afflict those who defy [the truth] (MAS Abdel Haleem, The Qur’an, Oxford UP, 2004)
Is this not taken out of the quran saying that Christians believe God is one of three? Isnt that saying we are polytheists? This also answers question 2!

3)And behold! Allah will say: “O Jesus the son of Mary! Didst thou say unto men, ‘Take me and my mother for two gods beside Allah?” He will say: “Glory to Thee! Never could I say what I had no right (to say). Had I said such a thing, Thou wouldst indeed have known it. Thou knowest what is in my heart, though I know not what is in Thine. For Thou knowest in full all that is hidden.” Holy Qur’an 5:116

Doesnt this say Mary is part of the trinity?
  1. Many muslims fail to understand that God can have a son through a women without marriage, after all, he is God, what he does is right. They think for God to have a son, he would have to be married, that is where this thought has come from, that Mary was taken as God’s ‘wife’. This is not so. Jesus was a miracle and our saviour, God wanted him to be pure and this is the reason he chose Mary, as she was sinless.
I think if i made anyone look like a fool it is you. These passages display exactly the opposite of what you think. These display exactly the inconsistencies in the quran! And furthermore displays the errors of the quran.

No it’s not, it’s saying that Christians believe God (that is, Allah, The Father) to be one of three, i.e. The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit. Although I accept that in isolation this verse could be interpreted as condemning tri-theism (although this would still be strange argument, as it never mentions three ‘gods’ whereas verses like 16:51 which reference Zoroastrian beliefs directly say ‘two gods’), looking at it together with other verses discussing the same topic show that this cannot be the case. The very verse preceeding this one (which the usual firebrand polemicists rarely quote when making such arguments) criticises Christians for believing that Jesus is God, now obviously if Christians believe Jesus IS God (i.e. they are one and the same), they can’t possibly believe in three separate gods? So no, 5:73 is not condemning tri-theism, nor is it calling Christians polytheists (the Qur’an has a specific label for polytheists, mushrikeen, and not once is it used in reference to Christians).
3)And behold! Allah will say: “O Jesus the son of Mary! Didst thou say unto men, ‘Take me and my mother for two gods beside Allah?” He will say: “Glory to Thee! Doesnt this say Mary is part of the trinity?
No, it says no such thing, this verse isn’t even talking about the Trinity, but of idolatry. I find it interesting that the polemicists who come up with these arguments will only use their logic if it leads to a conclusion that is absurd, but not *too *absurd. 9:31 uses almost the exact same language and sentence structure to condemn Christians for ‘worshipping’ their priests, so they should also be arguing that the Qur’an says that Christians believe priests to be part of the Trinity.

Again, the Qur’an never refutes Christian doctrine by saying God doesn’t have a wife.

So muslims do believe in the Trinity. When do you want to start coming to Mass?

Doesn’t the last statement presume that God would require a woman to manifest Himself on earth? Doesn’t that limit God? Why could not God manifest Himself, as the second person of the Trinity, Jesus Christ, without having sex with a woman or being married? God is infinite. He can accomplish anything. What prevents God from implanting his spirit within an embryo inside of a very holy woman (or some other mechnism we cannot understand)?

Which gets back to the OP. What is so incredible about the concept of the Trinity? Saying the quran says differently is a childish argument so try to use a logical argument. God bless

I think you need to reread my statement, as you’ve obviously misunderstood it.
Tell us what the Trinity is according to the Quran.
This is a bit of an obscure question, but I’ll try to give a basic answer. In 5:72-73 the Qur’an strips the Trinity down to a two-part formula, 5:72 tackling the Divine Incarnation, and 5:73 tackling God consisting of three hypostases. These two concepts are addressed together in 4:171.

The Qur’an doesn’t say the Trinity is anything other than what orthodox (little ‘o’) says it is, other than disagreeing with it being the true nature of God.

Quran 005.072 - 73
They do blaspheme who say: “Allah is Christ the son of Mary.” But said Christ: “O Children of Israel! worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord.” Whoever joins other gods with Allah,- Allah will forbid him the garden, and the Fire will be his abode. There will for the wrong-doers be no one to help. They do blaspheme who say: Allah is one of three in a Trinity: for there is no god except One Allah. If they desist not from their word (of blasphemy), verily a grievous penalty will befall the blasphemers among them.

God is one of three in a Trinity. Thats Tri-theism (God#1 + God#2 + God#3), not Trinitarianism (God = person1 + person2 + person3, sort of like a guy with split personality).

Here are the other two gods in Mohammads pseudo-Trinity (or Tri-Theism)

Quran 005.116
And behold! Allah will say: “O Jesus the son of Mary! Didst thou say unto men, worship me and my mother as gods in derogation of Allah’?” He will say: "Glory to Thee! never could I say what I had no right (to say). Had I said such a thing, thou wouldst indeed have known it. Thou knowest what is in my heart, Thou I know not what is in Thine. For Thou knowest in full all that is hidden.

No offense, friend, but Mohammad did not know what he was talking about. And neither did you. Peace. 🙂

So was there really any point in me humouring your question when you were probably going to post this regardless of what I said? If those verses are calling the Trinity tri-theism as you say, then please explain how Christians could believe that God and Jesus are two *separate *gods, yet believe Jesus IS God? Think about that. There really isn’t any way to get around this without insulting your own intelligence, the Qur’an clearly doesn’t think Christians believe in three gods. Yet so far I’ve only witnessed one Catholic on this site with the integrity to accept this.

I wish you wouldn’t talk to me as if I’m an idiot, I’ve read that verse plenty of times (I even quoted it in my last post on this thread!), I’m fully aware of its existence and what it means. Why so many anti-Islamic polemicists seem to think you can quote passages from the Qur’an over 40 verses apart yet expect people to assume they’re talking about the same thing I’ve never been able to comprehend. For the second time, this verse is not even talking about the Trinity (why else is there no mention of ‘three’?), it’s talking about idolatry; and again 9:31 uses almost the exact same language and sentence structure to condemn Christians for ‘worshipping’ their priests, so why aren’t you arguing that the Qur’an teaches that Christians believe their priests are part of the Trinity? It’s the same logic, just the conclusion is even more ridiculous.

If you’re going to respond, then at least do me the respect of acknowledging what I’ve posted rather than repeating the same argument I’ve just shown to be false.
