With all the whining that goes on about Vatican Council II, “modernism”, etc. etc. etc. I’m curious as to why we have never had a discussion on the real beginning of the downward slide of the Church in the USA?

The Truce of 1968

In brief, when Pope Paul VI issued his landmark encyclical Humanae Vitae (natural family planning) on July 25, 1968, public dissent was widespread even amongst clergy.

This was particularly true in Washington, DC on the campus of the Catholic University of America. Dissenting clergy was disciplined by Cardinal Patrick O’Boyle. The penalities levied included suspension from active ministry.

The Vatican’s Congregation for the Clergy downplayed the nature of the dissent, fearing schism here in the USA. They recommended that the Cardinal lift the sanctions without demanding that the clerics repent from their dissent, or that they publically embrace the teachings of Humanae Vitae.

Laypeople and clergy alike instantly knew that they could publically dissent from the Church without action being taken. That was the beginning of what we all face in the Church today…

Our Lord posed the question, will he find faith when he returns? Many traditionalists have turned that question on the Church herself, but we know in faith that the Church is indefectible and immutable. The obligations of charity and reason require a more profound social examination, and it relates to the item above.

Oh come on. Most of the modern problem were condemned by preconciliar Popes. Anyways, why do you think this problem is only an American problem??? I think Cardinal O’Boyle and those dissenting priests had little influence on the seminaries in France,Ireland, England,Spain,Portugal,Italy and Germany, because of the geographical disparities. France has only 1% Mass attnedence per Sunday. You know the cluster system here ??? In France there are clusters with one priest and 13 parishes!!!p[but he had less than a normal priest becuase of his age!!!] Pope Saint Pius X said that modernism is the synthesis of all heresies. Now what heresies do you see currently??? Many, many, many heresies there are and what happens after heresies take power??? The Catholic Church Militant becomes weaker

This statement could apply to both extremes, the right and the left.

Why don’t you go debate this with George Weigel. I borrowed the thesis from him…
Then why did you post it??? You should back your own claims, with your own arguements

And the sad situation in France is not all about the Council. Her problems go to the Church’s failure to stand with the industrial working class.

Pope Pius XI :" Speak to me about the masses! The greatest scandal of the nineteenth century was the loss of the workers to the Church. The Church needs the workers, and the workers need the Church."

Oh, no question there!

The extremists believe they are miles apart, yet they are actually almost identical…

OT–is Weigel pretty orthodox? I found “The Courage to be Catholic” at the library last night and am reading it now.
