Genesis 2: 7

then the LORD God formed the man* out of the dust of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

My old Bible uses the term “Second Story of Creation.”

When we look closely at Genesis 1: 27 –
"God created mankind in His image; in the image of God He created them;
male and female* He created them. – We can picture God molding Adam’s material anatomy and breathing into him the spiritual soul which brings about the true human person in the spiritual image of God. (CCC 364-365)

When we look closely at Adam being formed from the earth and his life from the breath of God, we have to be careful that we do not give God, man’s material image. God is always a transcendent Pure Spirit without material restrictions. We have the amazing gift of being a spiritual creature.
(CCC 396 & CCC 1730)

We do not need to get hung up about a “Second Story of Creation”. We can find a comfortable spot and go deep into both Genesis 1: 27 and Genesis 2: 7. Putting the two together can be amazing.

I am continuing Genesis 2: 7 because I appreciate the posting of an excerpt from the Beatnik era. Be careful. This is not the time to judge the Beatnik era. Try to look at the excerpt as if it were proposed today.

From post 532, thread “Given the principles of evolution, natural selection, survival of the fittest, etc, do you think belief in the supernatural will die out or become a minority worldview?” in the Philosophy Forum.

Please read the following excerpt from Cat’s Cradle slowly. 😃

"God made mud.
God got lonesome.
So God said to some of the mud, “Sit up!”
“See all I’ve made,” said God, “the hills, the sea, the sky, the stars.”
And I was some of the mud that got to sit up and look around.
Lucky me, lucky mud.
I, mud, sat up and saw what a nice job God had done.
Nice going, God.
Nobody but you could have done it, God! I certainly couldn’t have.
I feel very unimportant compared to You.
The only way I can feel the least bit important is to think of all the mud that didn’t even
get to sit up and look around.

I got so much, and most mud got so little.
Thank you for the honor!
Now mud lies down again and goes to sleep.
What memories for mud to have
What interesting other kinds of sitting-up mud I met!
I loved everything I saw!
Good night.
I will go to heaven now.

(by Kurt Vonnegut, from Cat’s Cradle) "

I have not read this particular book. We do not need to have read this book. We can find delight in this approach at the same time we can reject the errors or that era.

My own favorite line is “Thank you for the honor!”
