I was rather shocked to find out the truth that on the surface Muslims deny terrorism but actually quietly support it.
The attitude of Islam toward using violence against non-Muslims is clear. Regarding pagans, the Quran says, “Slay the idolaters wherever you find them. Arrest them, besiege them, and lie in ambush everywhere for them. If they repent and take to prayer and render the alms levy, allow them to go their way. God is forgiving and merciful” (Surah 9:5). This amounts to giving pagans a convert-or-die choice.
Regarding violence against Jews and Christians, the Quran says, “Fight against those to whom the Scriptures were given as believe in neither God nor the last day, who do not forbid what God and his messenger have forbidden, and who do not embrace the true faith, until they pay tribute out of hand and are utterly subdued” (Surah 9:29). In other words, violence is to be used against Jews and Christians unless they are willing to pay a special tax and live in subjection to Muslims as second-class citizens. For them the choice is convert, die, or live in subjection.

I’m copying and pasting this, unfortunately I don’t have the original source to the commentary. I’ll attribute it to my imam since he sent it to me to prepare for a class but I’m not 100% sure it’s his or not.

Islamic Definition of Terrorism:

the **Islamic Fiqh Council **affiliated to the Muslim world league gave the following definition:

Terrorism is an outrageous attack carried out either by individuals, groups or states against the human being (his religion, life, intellect, property and honour). It includes all forms of intimidation, harm, threatening, killing without just cause and everything connected with any form of armed robbery, hence making pathways insecure, banditry, every act of violence or threatening intended to fulfill a criminal scheme individually or collectively, so as to terrify and horrify people by hurting them or by exposing their lives, liberty, security or conditions to danger; it can also take the form of inflicting damage on the environment or on a public or a private utility or exposing a national or natural resource to danger.2
  • According to the Islamic Fiqh Council, all these are manifestations of the mischief in the land, Allah has prohibited Muslims from committing.
  • “And desire not mischief in the land: for Allah loves not those who do mischief.” (28:77)
Hence, Allah did not only enact deterrent punishment against terrorism, aggression and corruption, but He considers these acts tantamount to waging war against Allah and His Messenger.

Islam’s Attitude Towards Terrorism:

Terrorism and violence are alien to Islam, and the teachings of Islam clearly reject the practice of terrorism and violence. This fact can be traced in the verses of the Qur’an and the hadiths of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

1- Assembly of Muslim Jurists in America (AMJA)

In its third annual conference held on July 21–25, 2005, in Sokoto, Nigeria, the Assembly of Muslim Jurists in America (AMJA) declares to the whole world the following:

The inviolability of blood, money, honor, and dignity of man are as sacred as the sanctity of Makkah in the sacred months; and any aggression on anything inviolable without any right to do so is a deadly sin that displeases and angers Allah and His Messenger.
  • Combat was ordained in Islam only to prevent war and aggression. Islam used swords just for defending the religion of Islam and Muslims, and not against civilians nor noncombatant men. Military actions are taken only against combating men and those who assist them in their aggression against Islam, Muslims, and the creed of Allah, and not against men who are not involved in military actions or who are not armed.
  • The Assembly prohibits acts of explosions, sabotage, and violence, and considers such operations as acts of war, which are actually war against Allah and His Messenger and seek to spread corruption and disruption among people.
  • The religion that prohibits frightening and terrifying people, even by arms and without using them, would rather deserve to be worthy of prohibiting all forms of violence, terrorism, sabotage, and destruction, and declares ceaseless war on those who commit such vicious acts.
  • The religion rules that a woman who confined a cat and prevented it from eating and drinking until it died will be tortured in Hellfire. And the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) told us that Allah the Almighty praised a man who saved the life of a dog when he found it so thirsty that it ate the wet dust. And it is told that the Prophet’s successor `Umar declared his full responsibility before Allah in Madinah for a mule that stumbled in Iraq and got hurt because the way was not paved for it.
  • A religion like this would never be imagined to permit shedding blood, stealing money, and committing vicious acts against the honor and the dignity of people, whether they are Muslims or non-Muslims. Allah has ordained in His Noble Qur’an (“If anyone killed a person not in retaliation of murder, or to spread mischief in the land, it would be as if he killed all mankind; and if anyone saved a life, it would be as if he saved the life of all mankind )” (Al-Ma’idah 5:32).

Interesting. It seems the AMJA takes a more liberal stance. All four major Sunni fiqh councils and the major fiqh council also rule that a sane apostate should be put to death.

I wonder how these councils would rule regarding the actions of groups like Hamas or Hizbollah, who maintain high public support in the Muslim community.

Hizbollah fires inaccurate rockets indiscriminately into civillian areas, and both Hizbollah and Hamas don’t distinguish between Israeli civillian and military (because of universal conscription).

The secret here would be first defining what the council considers “terrorism” to be, what an “attack on Islam” constitutes, and what a “civillian” is.

I too find this to be a rather even-handed article. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.

As has already been well established, it is morally permissible in Islam to lie to non-Muslims. (See this thread.) That is the only way a Moslem can claim that Islam is peaceful.

I think this article explains it very well.

Islamic Hatred, Bigotry and Violence

There is a saying, “Actions speak louder than words.” If the nature of Islam is not sufficiently clear from the words of the Koran, its nature should be abundantly clear from the shocking, outrageous crimes of violence, brutality and mass murder that its adherents are perpetrating against non-Muslims all over the world. Whether we are speaking of ugly terrorist acts in Israel, Russia, India, the United States or somewhere else in the non-Muslim world, Muslims distinguish themselves by their shocking lack of conscience and humanity in horrible crimes of violence. And, what is even more shocking, he justifies his horrible acts in the name of God and religion. In this way Islam stands alone among the major religions of the world. No other religion on earth has the violent nature of Islam, no other religion is so consumed with hatred against other religions. And lest anyone claim that this kind of violence is the work of only fanatical fringe elements of the Islamic faith, we must point to surveys in Muslim countries that show that in at least some Muslim countries as much as 70% of the people support the perpetrators of such crimes in their horrible actions. Muslim fundamentalism is not a small fringe element. Muslim fundamentalism is mainstream Islam. Muslim fundamentalism is the Koran—it is a back-to-the-Koran movement. We all saw the power of Muslim fundamentalism in Iran in its revolution. **Muslim fundamentalism is suppressed by many Muslim governments but is very popular among the masses. **

Let me ask this question. Suppose it was the other way around and we were doing to them what they are doing to us? Suppose, instead of Muslims sneaking into non-Muslim lands and murdering their hosts en masse, it was the other way around—that is, non-Muslims were sneaking into Muslim countries and murdering Muslims en masse for no better reason than that they were Muslims. What do you think would be the response of the Muslims to this? You don’t know? Let me tell you. The life of a non-Muslim in a Muslim land wouldn’t be worth a penny. Blood would be running in the streets. The Muslims would be out slaughtering the non-Muslims without mercy or humanity. That is just Muslim mentality. It is called by them “just revenge.” It is vengeance. It is part of their religion.

Let me ask another question. Suppose the situation in this world were reversed and it was the Muslims who had all the high technology and world power, and Christians had nothing, what do you think would happen? Knowing the depth of their hatred for the non-Muslims, it doesn’t take much imagination to figure it out. We are very lucky that that is not the case. Remember that Muslims attacked Europe in 711 CE and continued the charge as long as they had the upper hand over the Christendom, reaching the Gates of Vienna for the second time in 1683 .

Wake up, America!

It’s right up at the top:

Lobbing rockets at a civilian population like a Jewish settlement would be terrorism, according to Islam, and therefore forbidden, in case that’s what you were wondering.

How about a linky? Never heard of this “Fiqh”.

A link to what exactly?

A link to an explanation of the word fiqh? The Islamic Fiqh Council? The definition of terrorism?

Denial, denial! You live in denial. Even Muhammad claimed that he had been made victorious by terror.

To the “Islamic Fiqh Council”. You know, who the members are, where it is located, what type of authority they hold, etc.

The religion rules that a woman who confined a cat /QUOTE] the cat and mule must be Muslims otherwise they are object of skepticism as “ennemies” of Allah and Muhammad 😛

seriously now, yea all this is fine, but killing apostates, and killing people of the book who do not believe in Allah and Muhammad, and making them pay jizya with humiliation cannot be put on the same thread with cats and mules when the article is talking about Islamic violence against humans where any non-Muslim is a potential ennemy of Muhammad, Islam, the umma and Allah.

Amy,
Muhammad thought at first it was an evil spirit that was talking to him. His initial intuition was correct. If you’re objective about this, the Koran could not have been written if not for the OT and NT already in existence. Much of the content was plagiarized and twisted into a book motivated by jealousy primarily of the God’s blessed line through Abraham, while Haagar and Ishmael were sent away. This is nothing more than a cheap attempt to make it look like the line of Ishmael was actually the blessed line from God. In truth, he was not the one through whom the world would be blessed. Besides, God only made one Church… the Catholic Church which we are all called to be in. If you want to be in God’s family, you’re in the wrong house. This may seem like a harsh reality to you, but Islam was man made, and is inspired by hatred and jealousy. There’s more to it, but there is a start for you… away from hatred, bigotry and man made script that suited the author pretty well, and fans the flames of hatred on the face of the earth. While people created by God made them, neither the jealousy-inspired Koran nor the man made religion of Islam is from the true Word of God.

Thanks for that information. I was really wondering whether they consider telling lies to be a sin at all, or, as hambakhan pointed out, it’s only a “mistake:eek: and not a sin.

Do you have a reference for this? It would be great if you could provide me with it.
