Please provide a support for this claim. It may depend on how you define “non-combatants.” But the killing of women, children, and monks/clergy is clearly forbidden.
The “horrific” act in question was a raid on a caravan during a sacred month. This does not warrant the conclusion you draw.

Wahhabi Islam is a reformist movement dating from the late 18th century, attempting to return to what they consider pure, original Islam. They would say that Shi’ites and Sufis are not real Muslims, I believe. “Real Islam,” like “real Christianity,” is defined differently depending on your theological starting point.
I think that arguing over who is a “real Muslim” is unprofitable. Defenders of Islam say that bin Laden isn’t a “real Muslim.” Anti-Islamic polemicists say that bin Laden and friends are the “real Muslims” and more moderate Muslims aren’t really following Islam.
How about we just set this category aside and accept that anyone who identifies themselves with a particular religion is in fact a member of that religion?

The book to which you link explicitly speaks of Wahhabism and “other Islamic sects,” which goes against your point.
Wahhabism is certainly not traditional Islam. It is a modern movement. I respect your right (if you are a Muslim–your profile just says that you believe in “love”
) to refuse to recognize them. But as a non-Muslim I have no ground on which to recognize something called “real Islam.” It isn’t a phrase that means anything to me. There is just a historical phenomenon called Islam, and Wahhabism is clearly part of that. I don’t like Wahhabism. In fact I hate it, and its analogues in Christianity. But that’s not a basis for a statement regarding what is or is not “real Islam.”And I’m afraid that your post depends on an interpretation of the Qur’an that not all Muslims share. Bin Laden would simply respond that Americans are working mischief in the land, and for that matter are murdering Muslims, and thus can be killed with impunity.

I will soon post some matter on this subject about Wahabism and who is a real Muslim. Presently, I give one important Hadith on this subject:
The Prophet Muhammad said, “Any one who recites the Kalimah that “there is no God except Allah and Muhammad is a messenger of Allah”, and he eats from our food and he faces the ka’abah for prayers, is a Muslim. There is a guarantee for his safety from Allah and the prophet. So, you all believers, please do not break that pledge of safety.”
At another instance, when census was being carried out in Madinah, the workers asked the prophet Muhammad about whom to count as a Muslim (because there were christians and Jews and pagans living in the city), whom to count as a Muslim, the prophet replied “Whoever calls himself Muslim, count him/her for me as a Muslim.”
