There will be Justice in this country, the United States of America, when no citizen is discriminated against when it comes to housing, education, employment, healthcare, marriage, or law enforcement. I can legally be kicked out of my apartment/house irregardless of whether I can afford the rent/mortgage or not just because of someones religious convictions. A person can refuse to hire me or even interview me simply because of my transgendered, disabled, or bisexual status. I can be kicked out of school irregardless of whether I break any rules or not or whether I can afford the tuition or not. A doctor can refuse to help me, prescribe medicine that I desperately need, or even treat me for a life threatening condition because of their religious convictions. I am not, legally, allowed to marry a male or a female in this country. And when anything bad happens to me, most law officers refuse to do anything about it and say its my fault it happened and when I report it to the higher-ups in law enforcement and nothing is done. I have no justice or equal rights in this country, I am treated like trash in this country.

Oh you poor thing. So after you’re done bellyaching, what are you going to do about it?

This should be a lively discussion. 🙂
I can legally be kicked out of my apartment/house irregardless of whether I can afford the rent/mortgage or not just because of someones religious convictions.
Hi Maria, I am not sure where you live, and what you say is true in much of the United States. However, 13 states and 109 cites or counties have protections for persons on the basis of gender identity or expression. Some of these laws go back more than 20 years, providing ample experience with the effects of such laws. Their precedence, and success, is important for smoothing the ways for additional such laws in other states and localities.

I would note, however, that in the parts of the US which do not have such laws, discriminatory actions don’t require religious beliefs. A transsexual can be denied a job or medical care simply because the employer or doctor doesn’t like transsexuals.
A person can refuse to hire me or even interview me simply because of my transgendered, disabled, or bisexual status. I can be kicked out of school irregardless of whether I break any rules or not or whether I can afford the tuition or not.
Yep.
And when anything bad happens to me, most law officers refuse to do anything about it and say its my fault it happened and when I report it to the higher-ups in law enforcement and nothing is done.
Hmm… that might be an overstatement. :hmmm:

I think in large part it depends on where someone lives - some communities are more enlightened and some more benighted. However, I hasten to add that I am not familiar with what you have experienced, and from your post, I think you’ve encountered unjust treatment at the hands of authorities. And for that I am very sorry, and understand your frustration, and perhaps anger.
Oh you poor thing. So after you’re done bellyaching, what are you going to do about it?
This discussion will be more informative, and useful, if we remember to be charitable to those we disagree with.

Maria, your concerns and many and serious. I, and I am sure many others who read here, will keep you in our prayers.

Regardless of how individuals relate to you, there is ONE PERSON who never stops loving you UNCONDITIONALLY, and that is God. We know that that Jesus Christ is the Living Son of God, perfect in every way. Although He suffered terribily at the hands of the unjust, He continued to do His Father’s Will and reaped the greatest reward for us. As Catholics we are to be Christ like as best we can even knowing that we are imperfect, even as others cause us to suffer. That can be very hard, but with Christ on our side, we will reap the great reward.

It may be very hard to pray when we are in pain from others’ reaction to us. The shortest, most powerful prayer I know is

JESUS, I TRUST IN YOU.

Say this prayer as often as you can.
In due time, Jesus will give you more strength to deal with your fears and difficulties.

On a practical level, one of life’s great lessons is learning that I cannot change others or the world. I can only change how I deal with it all. I can chose to fight them on every issue every time or I can pick and chose my fights. Some transgressions I can ignore. Although some, perhaps more than a few, are against me, I know that the whole world is not against me. I can find those who will relate to me on a more positive level.

I know that how individuals treat me can cause me to react in certain ways. It is also true that how I treat others can cause them to react in certain ways.

When I was a teen, I caddied at the country club. One member was thought to be mean to caddies. I was assigned. He started yelling at me before I picked up his bag and continued to yell at me for the18 holes. I kept cool and did my best. Next time he started yelling at me after his second shot and continued. I kept cool and did my best. The third time we came down the 18th hole and he was talking nicely with me as if I was his best friend. A couple of weeks later, as our friendship increased I asked why he was mean to the other caddies but not me. He said he eventually he realized I was not being mean to him so he realized he should not be mean to me.

I was the poor kid who hitched hiked to the country club. He was the rich business man with the Lincoln. I won his respect and friendship because I tolerated his boorish behavior and acted with dignity long enough for him to realize I was worthy of respect. I eventually reaped what I sowed with him.

It does take time. We build mutual respect one person at a time.

JESUS, I TRUST IN YOU.

And when anything bad happens to me, most law officers refuse to do anything about it and say its my fault it happened and when I report it to the higher-ups in law enforcement and nothing is done.
Maria, I want to apologize for my earlier comment suggesting this might be an overstatement. I misread what you wrote, thinking you were referring to the experience of most transsexuals or transgender people. But upon second reading, I see you were referring only to yourself. Clearly, I do not have any idea of what you have suffered, and I had no business making a judgment about it. I am deeply sorry for having done so, and I hope you will forgive me.

Am I the only one who has trouble understanding what Maria’s problem is?

By the way, “irregardless” is not a word. You are mixing up “regardless” and “irrespective”.

I’m not sure “what her problem is”, I do understand that in the United States discrimination against transsexuals and transgender persons is legal in most areas. I think this is her complaint - that unjust discrimination is occurring.
By the way, “irregardless” is not a word. You are mixing up “regardless” and “irrespective”.
Well, yes. But if we want to play grammar police we will burn up a lot space here at CAF simply on the issue of “your” instead of “you’re.” Or the common (and nonsensical) American phrase “I could care less.”

**You’re life sounds like Jesus’, He was derided & murdered on the Cross, but He accepted His suffering for all of us!

Pray for the strength to be like Jesus!

Yes, this can help us to endure when faced with suffering and great hardships.

But I am not sure that Jesus would want us to ignore persecution and unjust discrimination, simply because he endured these things.

If anything, as Christians we have a responsibility for alleviating such injustices.

Without context, I just dont understand her concerns. Yes, a private landlord has the right to not rent to you - or anybody else - for whatever reason. Many laws are in place for apt buildings, etc and they cannot exercise that right however.
Yes, a small business owner can refuse to hire you or demand that you conform to behavior/dress that is more appropriate for their business. What you call discrimination most call good business. Why would you be kicked out of school? That is not clear.
No, you are currently not allowed to marry someone of the same sex. How is that unequal treatment? You have the same rights in that regard as I do? How are ignored by law enforcement? Again, you give a platitutde but give no context to your allegation.

Treated like trash? Compared to where? You seem to want - no, demand - acquiensence to your views of how you should treated regardless of societal norms or realistic expectations and then when that doesn’t happen, you cry foul.

It seems to me that you have a rather child-like, narcissist view of this life and this country.

Maybe, Mark, but with one little difference: Jesus didn’t whine, complain, or blame it all on society.
How dare you even claim that, I blame nothing on society, I blame the people in society who are bigoted or obtuse. I blame the people who have done unspeakable things to me. I do all that I can to help others. Why toil and sacrifice for people who would turn around and stab me in the back if given the chance? I have a right to be angry and disheartened, because I have done more than most and been given less than most.

You accuse me of dressing in an inappropriate manner, I dress better than most other women out there. I can be expelled from school just for being transsexual, something that I cannot change. I’m not allowed to marry people of either sex, so no I don’t have the same rights in that regard. I cannot marry the one I love, don’t tell me that I have the same rights. I have been raped before, when I reported it, the cops said I deserved it or was asking for it. I have been denied necessary healthcare simply because I am transsexual, how is that equality? If I have a contract with a landlord, he can opt out of it just because I am transsexual. The fact that they can simply refuse to interview me even if I am qualified and not even know anything about me is unjust. I suffered for this country, I worked for this country, that’s not child-like to want the same basic rights that every other citizen has. I just want to live my life without fear, is that too much to ask? I don’t have fear of intolerance or bigotry, I have fear of my rights not being defended. They haven’t and they likely never will.

Oh you poor thing. So after you’re done bellyaching, what are you going to do about it?
I’ve done all that I can to fight for my rights, but the majority does not care for equality. They already have their rights that they take for granted.

So you don’t blame society, you blame the people who make up society. Okay.

Your right to be angry does not stem from the fact you’ve done more than most. That’s just self-righteousness. You’re angry because you’ve discovered that there are people out there who aren’t sufficiently nice to you. The right to be angry stems from witnessing injustice, and your slip gave you away. You’re raging out of a wounded ego, not injustice.

If you are in the right about all these legal issues, and if you are smart, you will find a lawyer who will win these cases for you and make a lot of money for both of you. But here you are.

A lawyer won’t give me equal rights, for that I need the majority of US politicians. I cannot defend my rights on the basis of law because there are no laws that guarantee my rights.

If someone does something horrible to another person than they have done an unspeakable thing for which they have no one else to blame but themselves. I blame individuals for their actions, I don’t blame society for the actions on individuals. I have been treated unjustly, mistreating someone is acting with injustice.

So who are you to tell us to change our laws?

But if it’s legal, it’s legal, whether you personally feel it is horrible, unspeakable, or unjust, or not.
