The Truth about the Eucharist

Hi there,
I am a Catholic and I was very disturbed when I read something from a Protestant saying that the Eucharist is idolatry. I was wondering if you had any good ways to defend the Truth that the Eucharist is Jesus and not idolatry.
 
The early Church father also have writings that reveal how they saw the Eucharist.
 
It is not idolatry. If they are Bible Protestants, tell them every part of the mass is Biblically founded. You also can ask which part of the mass is idolatry.

“This is my Body.”​

Seems pretty clear to me. Matthew 26:26, Mark 14:22, Luke 22:19 are unmistakable. We know the Lord’s Supper was more than just a one-night show from 1 Corinthians 11:24 (also 1 Corinthians 10:16) and John 6:56.
 
Nearly everything to some Protestants is idolatry. By their own definition, the Bible could be considered idolatry.

I wanted to show the anti-Catholic article that I want to refute! Of course I totally disagree with it, but I wanted to show you the things that I want to argue against.

Ask them if they take the creation story literally, most Prots do.

Then ask them why they’d take a creation story literally but not the actual words of Christ in John 6

From the point of view that the “bread” is only a symbol, this is absolutely correct. If it is not really Jesus, and He is not present, then it is nothing more than worshipping a piece of bread.

I think the best response is to acknowledge that this view is correct, given the truncated gospel they have received. The Reformers began to deny the Real Presence in the Eucharist,and those who have received these heretical views believe them.

There is a great deal of apologetical material on the Real Presence, but it may not be of much use, if the person is not willing to accept that the Apostles taught something different than what they received from the founders of their ecclesial communities that broke from the Apostolic faith.
 
If they don’t take the creation story literally, point out the Jews in John 6 that say this teaching is hard who can accept it? And how Jesus doesn’t stop them from walking away. If they were walking away because they were taking him literally when He didn’t mean to be taken literally I think Jesus would have corrected them.
 
Ask them to prove it’s idolatry. That will be a project for them.

When you say “Protestant” which group do you mean? I was a Methodist before converting and we did not say the Eucharist is idolatry.
 
It’s a common theme among the Jack Chick types and other evangelicals.

thank you, steido01, I actually revised that sentence while I was writing it because I was remembering how provoked Luther became with Zwingli and Calvin for rejecting this.
