An early-Twentieth-Century monarch who was beatified in 2004, the Emperor Charles of Austria should be ranked with saints who were kings and queens, such as Saint Elizabeth of Hungary and Saint Louis, king of France. With a deep devotion to the eucharist and the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and receiving the eucharist every day, he turned to prayer whenever he had to make a decision. And too his relationship with his wife illustrates something of what a Christian marriage can be.
A national leader will obviously face special demands on his faith and, in his case, in particular because his country was at war during World War One. During the war he was the only leader who supported the Pope’s efforts for peace, the French writer Anatole France saying that “the Emperor Charles has offered to make peace; here is the only decent man to appear in the course of the war.”
Losing his position at the end of the war, he died in poverty with his wife in exile, forgiving his enemies, his eyes turned towards the eucharist.
 
I always mention a bit about Blessed Charles in my history class 🙂
 
Was he a king as well as an emperor? Generally an emperor is a step above a king, though there were people like the British monarchs who called themselves both.
 
Last year I was priviledged to assist at a Solemn Mass (EF) where HRH’s grandson was in attendence, and afterward he spoke to us about Blessed Karl and the beatification process. He and his wife were truly inspiring monarchs. I’d take them over our democracy any day.
 
Wonderful news! Emperor Karl happens to be one of my favorite ‘soon to be’ saints.
 
Why is this taking so long? The 2nd miracle needed for his canonization was accepted back in 2008…does it usually take 4 years AFTER the acceptance of a 2nd miracle to be acknowledged officially as ‘Saint’?

he was both the king of Hungary AND the emperor of Austria
 
On June 24, 1911, Princess Zita of Bourbon-Parma and her mother were received in audience by Pope Pius X. The Pope informed her that she was going to marry the heir to the throne.
Pope Pius X remarked that Archduke Charles was the reward that God had given Austria for her services to the Church.
In 1911 Archduke Francis Ferdinand was the heir of Emperor Francis Joseph.
 
The pomp of the crowning of Emperor Charles I and Empress Zita of Austria as King Charles IV and Queen Zita of Hungary did not make the royal/imperial couple forget the sufferings of the people tried by the war in 1916. The eighteen dishes of the banquet were only presented to the dinner guests. Then the food was sent to the wounded soldiers in the hospital of Budapest.
 
Starting in 1917, Emperor Charles I tried to make a separate peace treaty between Austria and the Allies. To this end, he sent his brothers-in-law, Prince Sixtus and Prince Xavier, on several occasions, to the governments of France and England.
