I see that the movie The Two Popes is available on Netflix. I haven’t had a chance to watch it yet, but has anyone else? if so, what are your opinions?

I do not exoect to watch it. From the reviews I have read, it portrays Pope Benedict’s personality poorly. From realistic sources, Benedict XVI is an extremely kind and pleasant and generous man.

We watched it last night. I wish I knew what is real and what is not.

The short answer is, none of it is real. Some of it may be based in truth, but you should basically treat it as what it is: a piece of (Fan?) fiction portraying people who are still alive. But who had no (name removed by moderator)ut on the creation of this movie.

I just finished watching it. It was entertaining. I have no idea how accurate it is.

Since I, of course, am not personally acquainted with the man, I have no idea how kind, pleasant and generous Benedict is. That said, I think Anthony Hopkins did a very good job. I didn’t think that he portrayed Benedict in a negative way at all.

It would be most interesting to hear what Pope Francis thinks of it.

I watched it last night. I didn’t like how Benefict XVI was portrayed. It was slow in
some places. It is about a meeting between the two Popes that did not take place in real life. I did think the two actors did a good job though portraying the 2
Popes.

I watched it last night. good review on Crux, interview with the director (Catholic) which sheds some light on his intentions.
I recommend watching.
Will watch it again this weekend.

Have you even watched it? I thought Benedict was portrayed in a somewhat sympathetic manner.

I enjoyed it. It is highly fictionalized but I didn’t see it as particularly anti-Benedict. I very much enjoyed the scene near the end where the two popes hear each other’s confessions.

Yes, I am not saying you can’t get anything out of the movie. There are humorous and poignant moments. As I said, the actors portraying both Popes did a very
good job. They are 2 Popes who come from 2 culturally different continents.
It had redeeming scenes.

That’s what I suspect, very subtlety done, but let’s make home the antithesis of good Pope Francis.

I agree Pope Benedict wasn’t portrayed very well. I thought they showed him as almost arrogant during the Conclave where he was elected and short tempered and self-interested the rest of the time. I doubt is really the case.

I hope that it’s done tastefully. It does look very interesting!

The portrayal of BXVI was down right slanderous. I do see what the director was trying to do, but he didnt have to have the portrayal of BXVI be the complete opposite of who he his. He could have made his point while being accurate

Anyone who knows anything about Ratzinger knows 1) he had zero desire to be pope. He was not an ambitious man. He even submitted his resignation to JP11 on several occasions. He was an scholarly man, and intellect, who just wanted to go back to Bavaria and write books and add to the theological discussions of the 20th century. He is well known by those who know his to be a very shy and humble man. Complete opposite of Hopkins portrayal.

I watched it. Slanderous in my view. Those who actually know him have said thru the years that how the media portrays him is nothing like who is really is. He is known to be a very humble, kind, and shy man. Nothing like the Hopkins portrayal
