The Two Shall Become One?

This is why fornication is so harmful, because it attempts that union outside the bonds of a valid marriage.

Yes and it causes harm to both of them because it is done outside of marriage. Simply the physical bond, the oxytocin bond, happens anyway and cannot simply be wished away. Extramarital sex hurts people.

I’m not disagreeing with the physical results of sex; I’m talking about what you mentioned – the “two become one”.
OK… so, if you’re saying that “two become one” refers to the sex act, then…
[Jesus said], "from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female. For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother [and be joined to his wife and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, no human being must separate.”
… so, by your definition, “two become one” means “God has joined together” and “no human being must separate.”

Here’s where I think you’re mistaken: if what you say is true, then Jesus’ words mean that it is sexual intercourse that makes for the “till death do us part” dynamic, not marriage. It’s right in His words: two become one flesh… therefore, God has joined.

I think sexual intercourse is only trivially a part of “two become one” – it’s marriage that makes this happen.

Christ said “two become one FLESH”

Your argument is with Christ. He could have said “one being” “one heart” “one mind” “one soul”.

More than one thing happens.

In a valid marriage, two people have marital intercourse and become one flesh.

At the same time, at a valid wedding, God has joined these two humans in the bonds of matrimony and a human decision (like civil divorce) cannot end that bond.

No. It’s really just with your interpretation. 😉

Aah, but you said that unmarried people have sex and therefore become one flesh, too! So… if they’re becoming one flesh, then that physical union is what creates the unbreakable bond from which no one can stray!

Can’t have it both ways – either “one flesh union” means marriage, or it doesn’t… but not both. 🤷‍♂️

(Edited to add:

Here’s the other thing: if “one flesh union” means “sex”, then aren’t we saying that they’re only “one flesh” while they’re copulating? Or, if it means that they’re always “one flesh”, then we’re not talking about sex, we’re talking about marriage !)

They talk poorly of her. They kicked me out because she didn’t feel she wanted my sister as a bridesmaid.
I usually don’t get involved in posts of this type because of my own circumstances. But that above line caught my attention. They kicked a child out of their/it’s home because of a choice of bridesmaids?? Pretty petty when viewed in the light of an entire life. Your wife and child are now your responsibility. You owe your parents respect as the commandment states, but then they owe you theirs. Move on.

Put your own child first. You owe greater obligations to him than to your parents.

Had to end up cutting them out for a time. They have broken all my boundaries and have not once been able to listen to my feelings or hear what I need in order to feel emotionally secure around them. Catholic therapist days I need to focus on my new little family right now and honor my parents by forgiving them and praying for God’s graces and blessings in thier lives.

This is all stressful. But oddly I feel a bit of peace.

My husband and I no longer visit or speak to my mother in law. I feel at peace because for 20 years we’ve accepted her horrible behavior towards me. A part of me feels bad because we’re supposed to honor but she spreads lies , is manipulative etc… and it’s been the most peaceful year of my adult life. A part of me thinks I’m making excuses and I need to suffer her for Christ and make amends but i can’t bring myself to.

I was told by someone that you can still honor toxic people while being cut off from them.

You can honor toxic people by calling down graces and God’s best blessings for them every time you think about them. Also not speaking ill about the person is also honoring them.

There are ways to honor parents who are toxic without having to sabotage your own mental and emotional stability.

Just because someone is blood doesn’t mean they are entitled. Remember Jesus said “Whoever does the will of my Father is my mother, brother, and sister.” Not because you have their genetics.
