The UK NHS...did the Catholic Church object to contraception there?

Just wondering…under the National Health Service in the UK, contraception (and probably abortion) is permitted. I daresay it is available to everyone in the country, including employees of Catholic parishes and dioceses.

Does or did the Catholic Church object to this the way it is now doing with the HHS mandate?

I don’t think you understand the issue the Church has with the HHS mandate, requiring the Church’s institutions to purchase and pay for contraception.

This issue does not exist in the UK system. The UK system is paid for by general taxation, analogous to Medicaid in the US.

Did I say I did not understand the position of the Church with the HHS mandate? I do understand it. However I am not convinced by the argument. Money, including Catholic money, money from payrolls or building taxation, or however the UK Inland Revenue works is paying for birth control, vasectomies, and worse. I just read that the NHS does not pay to reverse sterilizations, however.

So all UK taxpayers, including Catholic priests and bishops pay for it in general taxation.

Would the US Bishops have remained silent if we had a single payer health care system paid for by taxes? Excuse me but you know the word I am thinking of.

The public have no moral responsibility at all for how the Government uses the general taxation pot.
It would be different if we had specific amounts deducted from salaries to pay for something that contradicted Church doctrine but that does NOT happen in the UK.
