How is it uncharitable to simply ask: Why hasn’t the pope, or anyone from the Vatican, ever met with Rev. Moon? Why is that a problematic question? As another poster stated, I’m under no obligation to “respect” Rev. Moon, though charity, civility, and CAF posting guidelines obligate me to do so. Please don’t derail this thread - the question at hand, which I am asking again, is whether the Vatican has ever established any dialogue with Rev. Moon. There’s no need to get defensive about it. Simply an honest question in need of an honest answer. 🙂
I think it’s a good question to ask: why hasn’t the pope met with the Rev. Moon? Well, one reason that the pope hasn’t met with Rev. Moon may be due to that bit of unpleasantness regarding the excommunication of Archbishop Milingo, in which Bl. John Paul ll was personally involved, since the pope tried to get the erring Archbishop to come back to his senses, after said Archbishop married a South Korean woman, and the marriage ceremony was performed by the Rev. Moon.

In addition, the extremist views the the Unification Church speak for themselves. However, members of this sect do tend to be really nice people, and they are similar to Mormons in this sense. I have a friend who is a member of the Unification Church, and I’ve attended several luncheons at her home with women members of their church, and they are very sweet and kind people.

havana1 - sorry and beg forgiveness for inferring otherwise, as that’s how you read my post, but certainly asking that question is not at all controversial, nor did I intend to suggest that. Further, as far as can be told, the Rev. Moon has never had an audience with the Pope or any of his representatives, for that matter.
Don’t you think it’s a little…curious, to say the least, that Rev. Moon gets far more pomp and circumstance from Congress than our Holy Father ever got when he visited Washington? I think it’s very troubling that it’s somehow “taboo” for Catholics to ask questions about Rev. Moon. As long as it’s in compliance with CAF forum rules, I don’t think anyone should have to defend or justify asking relevant questions about why so many Catholics simply don’t care about the Unification Church’s influence upon our society (judging by all the Washington Times news links that get tossed around so nonchalantly around CAF.)

Curious? No. Disturbing? Yes.

Not at all. There has been some very honest, respectful exchange between Catholics and followers of Rev. Moon in this very thread.

Agreed! And to be honest, I had heard this before, but never truly appreciated the depth of the relationship between the UC and the news agency until reading up on it once again after seeing mention in this thread. Thanks for raising the point.

Peace!

Rev. Moon is a public figure and can be critiqued as much as you wish (within reason of course), there are no rules on CAF concerning his church.

Regarding Rev. Moon and the Vatican - and I have no objections to questions - I understand that numerous attempts at contact were made from our side, indeed I believe for a time there was on Unificationist with that specific assignment; but I think there hasbeen little response.

Archbishop Milingo was himself so convinced by Rev. Moon’s teachings that he decided to marry a Korean Unificationist, with Rev. Moon’s blessing. I understand that the pope had great respect for Milingo, but it was not possible to reconcile the Roman Catholic tradition with Milingo’s new commitment.

I do not know what is meant by “the extremist views the the Unification Church speak for themselves”, so I cannot comment.

I sent the reply above by email about 24 hours ago, but someheow it hasn’t yet appeared, There are many more matters raised, including The Washington Times and sushi restaurants in the US. I think if for some reason you are “negative” about Father Moon, anything you hear about him can be made to have a sinister ring. It becomes yet another “conspiracy theory”. One can talk and talk around the subject, but the best thing is to take a serious look at Father Moon’s teachings and actions. One good place to start in reverendsunmyungmoon.org. Check it our for yourself.
