The unlikely Ginsburg-Scalia friendship

Agreed. I love their friendship, and I hate how we’re losing our grip on the idea that you can disagree with someone while still liking them personally and recognizing their humanity.
 
Indeed. And I think we here on CAF are among the worst offenders. Instead of “Catholic Answers Forums” the name should be changed to Continuous Arguments Forums. Between the liturgy wars, the Vatican II pro- and -con wars, and the left-vs-right wars (which puzzles centrist pragmatists like myself), I find it less and less “Catholic” here. I often wonder why I keep sticking around for more of this punishment. Indulgence for time off purgatory perhaps?
 
I loved reading about their friendship. I read somewhere that Ruth Bader Ginsburg once said she was glad he pointed out all the flaws in her arguments because then she could go back and amend them. That’s what is missing in the world right now. People can’t see how much they can learn from reasoned debates between two (or more) points of view.

For the same reason, Justices will often hire one law clerk with the opposite political beliefs and persuasions to themselves.
 
I knew they were friends.
Two lawyers and judges have a lot in common. They worked together as well.

We don’t need to be exactly the same as our friends.

Its a good example to show that people can be friends and civil even if they don’t agree.
 
This used to be the case with people in my parents’ and grandparents’ generations at least; they could talk about all sorts of things and differ completely, yet still love and respect their friends.

I think this still exists but it is a lot harder in today’s cancel culture.
