The "unpardonable sin" apologetics

I’m on another forum and there is a real fear by some of the Christian members there of committing the “unpardonable sin”.

Is there a Bible verse that talks about how God can forgive any sin? And that the “unpardonable” one would more relate to one of impenitence?

Or any articles, etc…
 
Jesus said that Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit would not be forgiven in this world or the world to come.

Since Jesus said it it has to be true!

CCC 1864 “Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.” There are no limits to the mercy of God, but anyone who deliberately refuses to accept his mercy by repenting, rejects the forgiveness of his sins and the salvation offered by the Holy Spirit. Such hardness of heart can lead to final impenitence and eternal loss.
 
Before our lord led me back to the catholic chuch I had gone to other churches.I did not know any better.I now know that JESUS CHRIST his self founded the catholic church, personaly I could not ever leave the church I commit the rest of my life to our lord, there are people who choose to go to baptist churches and they love Jesus too,very very much, but,and I will qote him.(I dont beleive in repenting to a man.) Personaly going to confession is the most important thing in my relationship with our lord,without it I would still be a prisoner of the world.Anyhow,I cant help but wonder if his confession of his sins is the same as when us catholics actually confes to the Father,I mean I know that it probably is not, but how could I inform him that it is not the same without offending him.

There are two references in the Bible which refer to the “unforgivable sin”.

(1) Matt 12:31-32

"Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.”

So, there is an unforgivable sin, but notice that Jesus said God would forgive all the other sins, if only you ask. The agent that God uses to pull people to Jesus for salvation is the Holy Spirit, so many people believe that if you commit this unforgivable sin you wouldn’t want to repent anyway, since it is the Holy Spirit that draws you. Your continued desire for salvation is a sure sign that you have not committed this sin. If you had committed that sin you would have no desire for salvation.

Also, some say that the unforgivable sin is when a person is at his death bed and his last words still denounce God and his unbelief in Jesus, and renounces that Jesus can forgive sins and save him from Hell. This person would turn his back on Jesus and not only refuse to seek redemption but would also condemn it…

Other unforgivable sins that can be committed are referenced in The Book of Revelation:

(2) Rev 14:9-11:

“Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name.” NKJV

Therefore, in my opinion, there are unforgivable sins, but they all add up to those who turn their backs on God, by means of the Holy Spirit, and even denounces His existence up to and at the time of their deaths. Also, (ref: Matthew 12:31-32), in one of the biblical footnotes on “Unforgivable Sin”, the definition states: “The sin of attributing good works to Satan instead of to the Holy Spirit.
 
In Bible passages which mention this topic, one should understand that Jesus did something Pharisees couldn’t- He chased off the evil spirit which produced incapability to speak in person carrying it. Since rituals for cleaning from this evil being required demon to say his name ( from the mouth of person in which it is ), Pharisees were unable to clean it.

Seeing Jesus cleaning the person using Holy Spirit, they claimed Jesus Himself has a demon which is stronger then the demon He chased off. Jesus said that demons don’t do that since their kingdom would collapse that way, prooving that He had Holy Spirit.

Pharisees commited insult to Holy Spirit claiming that He is evil. They had absolutely no reason to doubt in holy nature of The Divine Being which was in front of them, yet they called Him evil.

Today, interpretation of this sin in Catholic theology is that it’s not a one-time insult to Holy Spirit, rather persistance in it- as Pharisees were claiming Holy Spirit was evil even when they were next to His “activity”, not accepting God is at work there, but rather going into radical interpretations of what was happening all the time.

They are reported for us by the Synoptics in connection with a particular sin which is called ‘blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.’ . . . Why is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit unforgivable? How should this blasphemy be understood? Saint Thomas Aquinas replies that it is a question of a sin that is ‘unforgivable by its very nature, insofar as it excludes the elements through which the forgiveness of sin takes place’ (ST 2b:14:3). According to such an exegesis, ‘blasphemy’ does not properly consist in offending against the Holy Spirit in words; it consists rather in the refusal to accept the salvation which God offers to man through the Holy Spirit, working through the power of the Cross. If man rejects the ‘convincing concerning sin’ which comes from the Holy Spirit and which has the power to save, he also rejects the ‘coming’ of the Counsellor . . . If Jesus says that blasphemy against the Holy Spirit cannot be forgiven either in this life or in the next, it is because this ‘non-forgiveness’ is linked, as to its cause, to ‘non-repentance’, in other words to the radical refusal to be converted. . . . Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, then, is the sin committed by the person who claims to have a ‘right’ to persist in evil—in any sin at all . . . [T]he Church constantly implores with the greatest fervor that there will be no increase in the world of the sin that the Gospel calls ‘blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.’ Rather, she prays that it will decrease in human souls” (Encyclical Letter Dominum et Vivificantem “The Lord and Giver of Life”] 46-47).
 
The only unpardonable sin is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit, as Christ said. But he also never fully described what the Holy Spirit was, therefore making it literally impossible to blasphemy. The Holy Spirit is one of those intense mysteries of the faith, but as Christ said, “I have much more to tell you, but you couldn’t bare it now.” Therefore Christ himself says he has much more information for us and I am sure these will clarify all the mysteries of God and the spirit realm, currently it is impossible to blasphemy an entity which isn’t really understood.
 
Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is refusing to give up your sins.

Coincidentally, the only sin that can never be forgiven is the one that’s never given up.

there are thousands of children who have taken this challenge and denied the Holy Spirit. Even if they haven’t committed the unforgiveable sin, they may think they have. This could lead to despair later on.

The third Person of the Blessed Trinity, partaking equally of the same divinity as the Father and Son, with whom He co-exists from eternity; not born nor made, but proceeding from the two persons by their mutual love, as from one principle. Breathed forth by the Father and Son, He is called the Spirit or the Holy Spirit; and we fully attribute to Him the works of love (regeneration, revelation, sanctification). He is “sent” down by the Father and the Son ON A MISSION TO RENEW THE HEARTS OF MEN. In reality this renewal, like all works exterior to the Trinity itself, is effected by all three Persons equally. All three Persons enter a soul who loves God, but the second and third Persons alone are the ones sent, the Son by the Father, and the Holy Spirit by the Father and Son.

On Pentecost the Holy Spirit, having been sent by Christ, descended upon the Apostles (Acts 2:1-4) and on that day took up His abode with the Church (people) in a special way. He is the source of holiness in the Church, communicating the grace of Christ to all the members of the Church and making them adopted children of the Father. As the source of grace, the Holy Spirit is also the source of the spiritual unity in the Church since by grace all men are united through faith and love.

Scripture recounts four instances in which the sending of the Holy Spirit was accompanied by a visible sign: When His presence was symbolized: (1) by a dove at the Baptism of Jesus (Matt 3-16); (2) by a bright cloud at Christ’s transfiguration (Matt. 17-5); (3) by the breath of Christ when He gave the Apostles the power of forgiving sins (John 20-22); and (4) by tongues of fire on Pentecost Sunday (Acts 2:1-4).

My personal comments: I think that sometimes we should perhaps be praying to the Holy Spirit for guidance here on earth since He was personally sent down to be with us and guide us. It appears that many of us ignore the Holy Spirit and go straight to God or Jesus. Although they are all the same person, there was a reason why Jesus, when he ascended to Heaven, sent down the Holy Spirit to be with us and for us. We should, perhaps, give more attention to the Holy Spirit than most of us do. This is open to much conversation, but we must keep in mind that God/Jesus “SENT” the Holy Spirit to be with US. We should not ignore His presence.
