A movie was made of this with Gregory Peck playing the Monsignor. It is called The Scarlet and the Black. It is a decent movie and I recommend it.
 
I have the movie on DVD. I remember when it was shown on TV. It was a made for TV movie, not made for the theater
 
The end of that movie is pretty amazing. Just the text of epilogue that is presented at the end just shows the power of love to melt even the hardest of hearts.

I was absolutely shocked when I read the epilogue. (Not spoiling it!) Yes, truly amazing.
