I understand that a revision of the Vulgate was commenced in 1907. On July 25, 1996, the Vatican announced that this revision was still underway. Has the revision been completed, and if so when?

Hi Abray,

The original purpose was to publish a critical edition of the Vulgate as it had come out of St. Jerome’s hands. Eventually, this became the Nova Vulgata project, which goes beyond the original purpose by CORRECTING Jerome’s text where the latest research on the original text warrrants it.

So what you have in the Nova Vulgata is a critical text of the original Vulgate to which are incorporated corrections according to critical editions of the original texts.

I believe you.

But the date doesn’t tell me anything of the contents.

Some sections of the Neo-Vulgate are the same as the 1598 Clementine Vulgate, with only light editing; this was the original intend of the edition, i think.

Other sections loosely re-phrase the verses, in Latin, but favoring the Hebrew and Greek whenever there is any difference between them. It seems to me that there were two schools of thought in the group that worked on this edition, and they continued their work unreconciled.

Hi Ron:

Thank you for the information. I appreciate it.

It is interesting that people still inquire about the Vulgate. I want a copy of the Vulgate to use with the Douay-Rheims(Challoner revision)

Hello Tee:

To summarize the V.I.S. announcement of 25 July 1996, it says that in 1907 St. Pius X instituted a study commission for the preparation of a definitive edition of the Vulgate. Pius XI in June 1933 decided to found the Pontifical Abbey of St. Jerome for the revision and emendation of the Vulgate. Work on the Vulgate has been carried out by three members of the Order of St. Benedict under the supervision of the Holy See. The volume dedicated to the prophet Daniel came out in 1981, the one on the minor prophets in 1986 and the last one, on the Maccabees, was completed this year. Once work on the Old Testament is completed, the pontifical commission will be dissolved. abray

Ron Conte: Of all the different editions of the Vulgate in the world which one do you think is the most accurate?

I cannot be certain which edition of the Vulgate is most accurate, but I favor the 1598 Clementine, in one of the better critical editions, such as the Hetzenauer edition.

Although some people severely criticize the Sixtine edition, from what I’ve seen in looking at some of the differences through many passages, the differences are relatively minor. The Clementine edition is a modest improvement on the Sixtine edition, but not substantially different.

I’m preparing my own edition of the Vulgate, but it is merely a light edit of Hetzenauer.
