I find it very disturbing to.
I would have to read the Vatican document before coming to any conclusions. Media coverage is notoriously inaccurate.

Ok, I will bite. Why? I am not Catholic so I guess I am not sure what is at all disturbing about this? Just a couple of bullets or so, just so I catch your perspective. Unless you just want to visit with other Catholics about it.

WHAT!, we’re apologizing for the New Testament?
“If you put off the moment that Jews will come to recognize Jesus as the Messiah until the end of time, then we don’t need to work or pray for the conversion of Jews to Christianity,” he said. “God already has the salvation of Jews figured out, and they accepted it on Sinai, so they are OK.”
Since when do we not have to work to convert anyone Jew or not or spread the Gospel? Christ, or no one ever said Jews salvation is assured. “No man comes to the Father except through the Son.”
“Jews are already with the Father,” he continued. “We do not have a mission to the Jews, but only a mission with the Jews to the world. The Catholic Church will never again sanction an organization devoted to the conversion of the Jews. That is over, on doctrinal, biblical and pastoral grounds. Finito.”
Is it official Catholic doctrine that the Jews are fine without Christs atonement? I can’t reconcile that if it is. The Bible, Christ and the Church have been quite clear on the issue. No more trying to convert Jews then?
Everytime I start feeling a little better I start reading this stuff. This article is distrubuing indeed. I mean we have a different Theology than Jews, let it be, according to their Theology Christians are idolaters, and polytheists. Why do we have to O.K. our religion with Rabbis’ all the sudden?

Has anyone actually read the document cited here? The article in Jewish Week does not appear to even name it.
I would love to read it for myself so I can see how possibly they perceived the Church is apologizing for the New Testament in any way.
Or that the Jews are doing “just fine thanks” without Christ?

And Eugene Fisher doesn’t speak for the Church, the Holy Father does. The Church is still in the business of evangelizing the world, Jews included. The Church is simply not targeting Jews for conversion any more than it is targeting any other religious group of people as if the Jews needed the message of Chris more than anyone else. You have to learn how to read these things with discernment and to take whatever is said by those who do not truly speak for the Church with a grain of salt.

That’s great and all, but that is clearly not what the article says. If what you say is true, I have no problem with it. But what you post is contradictory to the article.
I think we would need the referenced document in translated English to decide. Does anyone know if it’s been translated yet? If it has and it lines up with the article, it would be a radical shift in doctrine for the Church.
We don’t need to apologize for anything in our Bible. Jews don’t go around apologizing to people of the Old Testament they may have wronged, like Egyptians for killing their first born child, it’s nonsense. It’s in our New Testamen because God wants it there.
