The way people dress to Mass

I know some of you think that certain dresses are not appropriate for mass. Recently some local churches in city where I live begin to make official rules about dress code for attending mass.

I think that such step is very unwise, because attending mass is more important than how to dress for the mass.

Supposedly I have used up all my “polite” clothes during work days, I haven’t got any chance to do my laundry yet, should I come to mass with my “inappropriate” clothes, or should I just stay home?

This is just one example where “Traditionalist mind” could override what’s important with what’s not.
This looks like it has become a long thread. I didn’t read through everyones posts so I don’t know if anyone said this or not but God is much more important than anything. While I don’t think everyone needs to be in suits and ties and formal, I think everyone should try to dress modest, clean and nice for mass. I have a feeling modesty was probably the driving force behind the dress code.

Can’t we throw in one load of laundry on a Saturday night for God.

But what about those who attend Mass daily?

Well, the best thing I can suggest is just because an outfit or an article of clothing has been worn once doesn’t mean it is dirty. If you hang it up or fold it up and put it away you could probably get another hour or so out of your nice clothes. Not too long ago I had to go to the laundromat all the time because I didn’t have any machines at home. I learned quick not to assume something is dirty just because I wore it for a short time. I learned quick how to iron and fold.

If you have several outfits or articles of nice clothing, keep them for daily mass. Change when you get home. Hang them back up. Do a load of clothes in the evening. Have your
"kids help fold. “Dear Heloise” suggests putting a sheet on the floor in front of the tv and have kids help fold clothes while watching tv.

One of the things I remember most about Sunday’s as a little girl was coming home and changing out of our Sunday clothes and getting into our comfy clothes. We never threw down our Sunday clothes as if they were dirty, having been worn only an hour or so but would hang the back up and after several wearings they would get washed. One reason was because we only had like one or two Sunday outfits, we had to make them last.

:rotfl:

And for daily Mass, I have to wear what I’m wearing to work since I need to catch the bus immediately thereafter. Which generally means I’m wearing business casual with, er, tennis shoes or boots. Now that the weather is getting nicer I can at least wear my dress shoes as long as it’s not pouring rain (which it mostly is).

I will also second the thought that you don’t necessarily need to fully wash a garment you’ve only worn once (especially if you are a woman and said garment is a dress) for a couple of hours. It’s easier on the fabric, too, if you just spot clean and hang it back up properly.

This thread is sooo long that I couldn’t read all the answers but I was thinking about this topic lately.

When I go to Mass on Sunday, I usually wear a suit, iron my shirt and polish my shoes and go well groomed.
During the week, I’m often on my road bike wearing bike clothes(not tight shorts though but long trekking type pants, roughly like these: cache.pixazza.com/product/full/2540d0741.jpeg plus a bike jersey like this: cn1.kaboodle.com/hi/img/c/0/0/5f/b/AAAADO8AtwsAAAAAAF-90A.jpg?v=1248807064000). I often go to church to pray or go to the evening Mass druing the week while I’m on my bike. I often think f it might be rude to wear my bike clothes but I think in that case it is more important that I go to church to pray than not go.
Sunday Mass is a different story for which I specifically make sure to look neat.

Does anyone think it is inappropriate for me to wear bike clothes?

Certainly not.

I’ve had many German friends across the generations; I recall their devotion to prayers even at roadside shrines. If you’re able to find a church that’s open on your travels or even one that is celebrating Holy Mass, my guess is that no one would be startled or offended if you stopped and joined in to attend Mass.

Actually I also posted in a road bike forum if people know where you can get self designed Bike Jerseys. I would like to make my own Jerseys with Catholic motives, for example with my avatar on it.

I usually wear at least a shirt and tie (uh, pants too usually:D) generally with a sports jacket. Or I’ll wear a suit and tie.
During the week, however, I have to bike to church between my janitorial jobs. So there I am before the very throne of God in a work shirt and jeans.:o:o I really feel uncomfortable, but I trust that God will take my circumstances into account.
It is still really important to me to dress up for Mass whenever possible. After all, why would anyone dress better for, say, a job interview than for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass?

Great example and often applies at daily Masses.
Working at hospitals, one can see every type of uniform in the chapel
for Mass - janitor’s duds, surgical scrubs, whatever. It’s a no-brainer.

Most folks are so incredibly grateful to be able to attend
a daily Mass (at their workplace!), no notices anyone’s clothing.

I go to daily Mass. Many of us dress down a bit from our Sunday “best”. I can see no reason not to go to Mass in your bike clothes.

I sometime go in my boots, dressy shirt and such but most often i go casual, same should go for everybody, Go dressed with respect to God.

It make me rather sad when i see a woman of any age, young or old, dressed in mini skirts, shorts and with shirts that are showing a little to much…

I just found a website where you can order custom made bike jerseys with whatever motive you want. I think some Catholic motives on my jerseys might be a nice compromise. Also it can’t harm to make some “promotion” while on my bike:)

i think that perhaps a dress code is needed. The kind of outfits i’ve seen at Mass recently is really beyond the pale. Granted, i do live in the tropics and lot of people dress very casually normally but wearing cut off shorts, ripped up jeans, and women dressing like hoochy mammas is really going too far(and i have seen it plenty of all of that). Women seem to be worse offenders than men. Does anyone have any reverence for the church anymore and God? No, i’m not old(i’m in my thirties) and for the most part, i dress rather trendy, but i draw the line when i dress for church. I’ve worn pants, i don’t think there is anything wrong with that, but i make sure i don’t show too much skin, and nothing too tight and too short, or ripped up. Its really not appropriate to dress any other way at church, and i think people are taking “casual” to a whole new level.

Well…what do you expect in a society where people think its appropriate to go outside in your PJ’s…🤷

I agree. While I have been ‘guilty’ of going to church in my jeans (I have four kids to get out the door…they are all in dresses. I’m just lucky to be dressed :p), I am also horrified by women in SHORT skirts and high heels. I just want to ask them “You know you have to kneel, right?”. Oy.
