I have a serious questions about why the Catholic Church, allowed a blessing of the wedding to proceed when the Prince is said to have fathered so many children out of wedlock.

in normal circumstances, the church wont even entertain the idea, let alone put its stamp of approval on it.

This is certainly a question i would like to know and why these two were allowed to wed in this fashion.

The ceremony also gave many non-catholics the idea that this was a catholic wedding, certainly gave the illusion thereof.

I am just so sick of the double standards.
No wonder people loose faith in the church…

I don’t think that anyone of us here is in a position to pass judgement on His Serene Highness. However, I will say this: the Church condemns the sin, but, she still welcomes the sinner if he has the willingness to repent. None of us knows the state of Prince Albert’s soul. Mistakes were made, yes, but, the Church offers the font of penance and forgiveness.

We need to leave it at that and pray that Their Serene Highnesses receive God’s blessings as they begin their new life together and that they see Christ as the third, integral person in their marriage.

well if that is the case, then why the big fuss about same sex marriage then?

It so easy to create double standards…

These are two very different matters altogether. There is no such thing, in the Church’s eyes, as “same-sex” marriage.

So, your premise is that if someone sins in the past, they must be forever denied the sacraments?

That is not the Church’s position. The sacraments are always open to those who repent.

Proof please.

because they met all the canon law requirements for marriage.

There was no illusion. It was a Catholic wedding.

I’m trying hard to see what is a double standard, and have no idea what you are talking about.

I had no issues with their marriage. I presume they met all the religious and civil requirements for their nation to be married legally & religiously ahead of time. I am sure that they would have not had a Catholic Nuptial Mass had they not prepared ahead of time.

What made you think that?

I have to admit that as I watched I wondered about her ‘free will’.

You’re implying that a person who has had sex prior to marriage is required to abstain from sex for life, then? Where did you get that?

Having a child out of wedlock is not an impediment to a Catholic marriage.

There is no such thing, nor can there ever be such a thing, as a Catholic same-sex “marriage”.

A double standard is treating two people, or two groups of people, differently even though they act in the same manner. There is no parity between a man marrying a woman vs. a man “marrying” a man or a woman “marrying” a woman. So no double standard.

I have to agree with the replies, what does past sins have to do with the marriage? The only issue is if Prince Albert has an existing marriage that wasn’t found to be null and void. I don’t know how many people today are going into a wedding sparkling pure. All of us are sinners, we’ve committed something bad. I know most wedding preparations include receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation. I’m pretty sure thats the case here. And since you’re a big celebrity like the Prince, he could even had his Confession the hour before the wedding heard by the Bishop.

St. Augustine fathered a child out of wedlock, and went on to become the Bishop of Hippo and a Doctor of the Church.

Turlo, can you say with any certainlty that Prince Albert has not repented of his past and confessed the sins?
