Does anyone know when the notion of the Catholic Church as the Whore of Babylon started? I’m sure it’s relatively recent but don’t know it’s origins. Simply asking as knowing when ideas like this began is helpful for apologetics.

1856! More recent even than I thought. Thanks for the links.
 
It is as old as the 13th century. The Reformers did not invent the identification, bur gave it much wider currency than it had previously enjoyed.
