Think about it - the seven heads represent the Roman Empire or known world, and the ten horns represent the ten provinces of Rome. The seven crowns represent Satan’s power or total dominion over the world/Roman Empire.

The late David Chilton was a Protestant scripture scholar is one such who sees Revelation speaking of Jerusalem and the fall of the city in 70 A.D., thus “the woman” is Jerusalem who has been seduced by the riches of the Roman Empire only to be overthrown by the same Empire. Chilton’s book, The Days of Vengeance, is a detailed look at the book of Revelation. Regarding the riches and the purple and scarlet he writes:

The wealth of Jerusalem was a direct result of the blessings promised in Leviticus 26 and Deuteronomy 28. God had made her a great commercial center, but she had abused the gift. . . .Joseph described the luxurious wealth of the Temple’s facade (cf. Bobbiea, Revelation was written by St.John about the year A.D. 96 while the Catholic Church was enduring the horrendous persecutions of the Roman Emperor Domitian. It is written in apocalyptic code so that only “insiders” (members of the Church) would understand it – and not the evil Romans. You should ask the Church, not a Protestant, what it means. Protestants can only guess – they weren’t around for 16 centuries after Revelation was written.

I recommend The Lamb’s Supper by Dr. Scott Hahn. Easy to read. Dr. Hahn explains what the early Christians knew – that Revelation contains a description of the Mass as it is celebrated in heaven. He subtitled his book, “The Mass as Heaven on Earth.”

The Catholic Church selected the contents of the New Testament. Do you suppose she would have included Revelation if it means what some Protestants claim it means? Their interpretation is bull-oney.

Might I suggest splurging and purchasing the Navarre Bible’s commentary on the book of Revelation. It’s simply excellent and will help immensely in your understanding of one of the most complicated writings in our collection of Scripture.

You might also want to look at Biblia Clerus from the Vatican’s website, as well as the popular Haydock commentary. All can help.

Start asking some questions:

1. A golden cup automatically translates to the Chalice holding Christ’s Blood? Why?
2. Which ceremonial headress? Please be specific so we can look them up online. They are all available to see in pictures online. So let’s be specific. (They can’t because this accusation is false.)
3. What Roman numerology? Numerology of what?

When you start asking questions, you can start to disect these blatant falsehoods. The Book of Revelation is about many things. It tells about the Mass, it tells about the disobedience or bad behavior of some Catholic parishes, it gives some foreshadowing of the end times, it gives glimpses of Heaven (with Mary crowned as Queen).

Be very careful taking the personal, fallible interpretations of anyone as trustworthy about such a difficult book of Scripture. Listen to the Church, who (under the guidance of the Holy Spirit) wrote, compiled, declared as Sacred Scripture, and has protected the Bible. The woman is said to be “the great city” (Rev 17:18). The great city where Jesus was crucified (Rev 11:8). It is talking about the destruction of Jerusalem in Jesus’ generation (who conspired with Rome to kill the Messiah). In the OT Jerusalem was also called a harlot for her spiritual promiscutiy with pagan nations.

Who is the woman? Revelation (17:18) says the woman represents a great city. As far as I can see, the idea that she represents an apostate Church, even the Catholic Church, has no basis in Sacred Scripture. It’s my understanding that that idea originated with Protestant reformer Martin Luther as a way to convince others to “come out” of the Catholic Church. (Rev. 18:4) Otherwise, Sacred Scripture clearly refers to those who leave the Catholic Church as “antichrists.” (1 John 2:18-19)

What are the seven heads? Revelation (17:9) says the seven heads of the beast represent the seven mountains upon which the woman, the great city, was seated. Two likely candidates for the great city are ancient Rome and apostate Jerusalem. Ancient Rome is widely known to have been built on seven hills. (The headquarters of the Catholic Church is in Vatican City on Vatican Hill, not one of the seven hills of ancient Rome.) Jerusalem, according to Jewish tradition, was built on seven mountains, three of which are mentioned in Sacred Scripture: Mount Moriah, Mount Zion and Ophel.

Early Church Fathers seem to have favored pagan Rome, infamous persecutor of Christians. On the other hand, I personally favor apostate Jerusalem, where “was found the blood of prophets and of saints” (Rev. 18:24), including the blood of the prophet John the Baptist and saints Stephen and James. If the great city of Rev. 17:18 is the same great city previously mentioned in Revelation, “where they crucified their Lord” (Rev. 11:8) then it most certainly refers to apostate Jerusalem and explains the need for a “new Jerusalem.” (Rev. 3:12; 21:2)
