**I am not the one who cries “bigot” when the whore of Revelation is discussed. **
Nor did I.
Catholics do.

Just read this very thread.

This should not be a shock to anyone here.
In fact I don’t remember reading in ryan’s post ( to whom you were responding to) anything about bigotry.
I read a Catholic interpretation that labels Jerusalem and Judaism as the whore of Revelation.

I think it is fair to say many Jews would find that offensive.

If labeling Rome and Catholicism the whore of Revelation is “anti-Catholic” bigotry, then surely labeling the whore of Revelation Jerusalem and Judaism must be “anti-semite” bigotry.

How can it only be bigotry for one group and not another?

Why is one form of bigotry tolerated and even endorsed, while another is despised?

And if it is not bigotry at all either way, then why do so many Catholics insist it is, only as far as they are concerned?

This is a reasonable question. Pretending this issue does not exist, or mocking those who bring it up, will not make it go away.

I don’t get it.

When people say that the woman is the city of Rome and the Roman Catholic Church, it is “bigotry,” but when Catholics say the woman is the city of Jerusalem and Judaism, it is just fine?

I don’t get how you thought I was calling anyone a bigot. I believe those verses are talking about past events in the first century and not about Judaism in general. Jesus said Jerusalem would be destroyed by Rome and it was.

"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites. You build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the memorials of the righteous, and you say, ‘If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have joined them in shedding the prophets’ blood.’ Thus you bear witness against yourselves that you are the children of those who murdered the prophets; now fill up what your ancestors measured out! You serpents, you brood of vipers, how can you flee from the judgment of Gehenna? Therefore, behold, I send to you prophets and wise men and scribes; some of them you will kill and crucify, some of them you will scourge in your synagogues and pursue from town to town, so that there may come upon you all the righteous blood shed upon earth, from the righteous blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the son of Barachiah, whom you murdered between the sanctuary and the altar. Amen, I say to you, all these things will come upon this generation. "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how many times I yearned to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her young under her wings, but you were unwilling! Behold, your house will be abandoned, desolate. (Mt 23:29-38)

Jerusalem and Rome were in league against Christ’s holy ones until Jerusalem revolted and then Rome destroyed her.

Then one of the seven angels who were holding the seven bowls came and said to me, “Come here. I will show you the judgment on the great harlot who lives near the many waters. The kings of the earth have had intercourse with her, and the inhabitants of the earth became drunk on the wine of her harlotry.” Then he carried me away in spirit to a deserted place where I saw a woman seated on a scarlet beast that was covered with blasphemous names, with seven heads and ten horns. The woman was wearing purple and scarlet and adorned with gold, precious stones, and pearls. She held in her hand a gold cup that was filled with the abominable and sordid deeds of her harlotry. On her forehead was written a name, which is a mystery, “Babylon the great, the mother of harlots and of the abominations of the earth.” I saw that the woman was drunk on the blood of the holy ones and on the blood of the witnesses to Jesus. When I saw her I was greatly amazed. (Rev 17:1-6)

The ten horns that you saw and the beast will hate the harlot; they will leave her desolate and naked; they will eat her flesh and consume her with fire. (Rev 17:16)

This recalls how the Lord, in OT times, punished the harlot Jerusalem by sending her Gentile lovers to punish her.

**You played the harlot with the Egyptians, your lustful neighbors, so many times that I was provoked to anger. Therefore I stretched out my hand against you, I diminished your allowance and delivered you over to the will of your enemies, the Philistines, who revolted at your lewd conduct. You also played the harlot with the Assyrians, because you were not satisfied; and after playing the harlot with them, you were still not satisfied. Again and again you played the harlot, now going to Chaldea, the land of the traders; but despite this, you were still not satisfied. How wild your lust! says the Lord GOD, that you did all these things, acting like a shameless prostitute (Ezek 16:26-30)

Therefore, harlot, hear the word of the LORD! Thus says the Lord GOD: Because you poured out your lust and revealed your nakedness in your harlotry with your lovers and abominable idols, and because you sacrificed the life-blood of your children to them, I will now gather together all your lovers whom you tried to please, whether you loved them or loved them not; I will gather them against you from all sides and expose you naked for them to see. I will inflict on you the sentence of adulteresses and murderesses; I will wreak fury and jealousy upon you. I will hand you over to them to tear down your platform and demolish your dais; they shall strip you of your garments and take away your splendid ornaments, leaving you stark naked. They shall lead an assembly against you to stone you and hack you with their swords. They shall burn your apartments with fire and inflict punishments on you while many women look on. Thus I will put an end to your harlotry, and you shall never again give payment. When I have wreaked my fury upon you I will cease to be jealous of you, I will be quiet and no longer vexed. Because you did not remember what happened when you were a girl, but enraged me with all these things, therefore in return I am bringing down your conduct upon your head, says the Lord GOD. For did you not add lewdness to the rest of your abominable deeds? (Ezek 16:35-43)**

I don’t get how you thought I was calling anyone a bigot.
I was not claiming you were calling anyone a bigot, but noticing how Catholic interpretations of this text allow for behavior they despise in others.

How is this possible?
I believe those verses are talking about past events in the first century and not about Judaism in general.
Those are Jews condemned for the harlotry in the Scriptures you cite.
Jesus said Jerusalem would be destroyed by Rome and it was.
Jesus never said Jerusalem would be destroyed…and Jerusalem was never destroyed.

Actually, if you read the text in Revelation, the text says the city where the whore sits will never be occupied again.

That obviously has not happened to Jerusalem. Do you propose the Jews in the future will suffer this judgment of God in Jerusalem?

Catholics do.

I read the thread. You were the first to bring it up 🤷

But wait you said it wasn’t bigoted
I don’t think it is necessarily bigoted at all to say it is either…
So it’s not bigotry for you to say it but it is for a Catholic to say it? Which of your two statements is it?
How can it only be bigotry for one group and not another?
You’re the one who has brought up bigotry.
And if it is not bigotry at all either way, then why do so many Catholics insist it is, only as far as they are concerned?
No Catholic has mentioned as much in this thread.
This is a reasonable question. Pretending this issue does not exist, or mocking those who bring it up, will not make it go away.
Again you said you didn’t believe it was bigotry to say either was the whore. So why does your question present itself when ryan presents the one interpretation (and makes no mention of bigotry)?.. which you have said shouldn’t be considered bigotry in the first place?
I don’t think it is necessarily bigoted at all to say it is either…

and Jerusalem was never destroyed.

Protestant historian and Denver Theological Seminary professor Bruce Shelley disagrees with you:
In AD 70 the Emperor Vespasian’s forces, led by Titus, broke through the walls of Jerusalem, looted and burned the temple, and carried off the spoils to Rome. The Holy City was totally destroyed. In reprisals that followed, every synagogue in Palestine was burned to the ground… *Church History in Plain Language *pg. 23

I think Jesus is talking about a particular generation in (Mt 23:36). It was the last generation of the Old Covenant age. Which is why in Mt 23:35 and Rev 18:24 the blood guilt is at the extreme level and Christ charges them with all the blood of the Old Testament. The Temple’s destruction brought about the end of the Old Covenant world. Biblical Judaism (as it existed with the Temple standing) has ended. Judaism is different (even though it is the same in many ways). Jerusalem is different. It is not the same city even if it is in the same geographic location. That world is gone.

I believe the judgment described in the first 19 chapters of Revelation is in the past. “This generation” means the one that was alive when Jesus said it. It was the last generation of the Old Covenant age which was already in transition because the New Covenant had started. I don’t think this generation means all generations till the end of time.

I have no idea what will happen to the Jews living in Israel today. I hope they can live in peace.

I don’t get it.

When people say that the woman is the city of Rome and the Roman Catholic Church, it is “bigotry,” but when Catholics say the woman is the city of Jerusalem and Judaism, it is just fine?

…anti-Catholic propaganda, not bigotry!

The difference is that Jerusalem/Judaism did kill the prophets, did worshiped idols, did Crucified the Messiah! It is Yahweh God Himself that calls her a harlot as she bonded with pagans and rejected His Fellowship.

Simply stating facts should not confuse you; what should confuse you is why the only Church founded around 2000 years ago by Christ continues to be persecuted and defamed with a great anti-Christian ardor.

There is a key difference, though.

The interpretation that the Whore is “apostate Jerusalem” is aimed specifically at the first century. Any Jews being included are specific individuals of the first century who pursued violent anti-Christian agendas and were even willing to ally with pagan Rome to oppose Christianity, only for Rome to turn around and destroy Jerusalem and the Temple in the end.

That interpretation in no way attacks Judaism as a whole or Jews of any other era. Certainly Catholicism has struggled with anti-semitic tendencies over the millennia, but the idea that the Whore is apostate first-century Jerusalem was not one of the reasons for that.

Conversely, the interpretation that the Whore is Catholic Rome (rather than pagan Rome, which is a third option) is generally used to paint the Catholic Church as a whole as evil. One might argue that the interpretation is technically pointing the finger at the Church of a future era, when it will supposedly ally with the Antichrist and persecute “true Christians,” but the argument is most definitely used by those who oppose the Church as she is now, not just in some future version. “Come out of her, my people” is quoted to Catholics now by people who put forward this interpretation.

…let’s see… the Church does not teach it; the Church does not profess it; the Church does not educate in hatred of anti-Catholics… yeah, I can see why you would be so upset and confused… many non-Catholic “Christians” not only believe the anti-Catholic propaganda but they make it part of their fellowship (instructing their followers into the hatred of all things Catholics); I’ve heard it from so many (‘any church but the CC–throwing in “Roman” which in the original intention it was used as an insult or the “catholics are not Christians” or “catholics don’t read the Bible because x, y, z…” or “the catholic church kept the Holy Spirit hostage for nearly 1500 years”–yeah they don’t use my specific wording but their claim is just the same since it was only through man’s device that the “truth” came out in the 16th century–interestingly enough it seems that the Catholic Church kept the Holy Spirit hostage to impide Luther’s and others’ “truth” from spreading as wild fire {over 30,000 groups claiming to have the one version of another of that “truth”}) in many different forms and from several different sources… the top of the heap is that “666” nonsense.

Do you truely want enlightenment? Read the Sacred Writings, they will point you to Christ, the Only Lord and Savor of humanity, and to His Church, yeah the Catholic Church!

Biblical destruction is not always complete eradication of a nation/people; Biblical destruction many times takes the form of religious, social or financial eradication; many times in the Old Testament we find Jerusalem being dismantled and her people being carried off to foreign lands; at times, and sometimes coupled with the previous, her people would be oppressed from within–as in the Roman occupation in Jesus’ times; the destruction of the Temple in AD 70 is a very exact destruction of Jerusalem as the Romans razed the apex symbol of Judaism to the ground (incidentally, it has never been rebuilt and Islam occupies the very foundations of that Temple–which could be a type of occupation of the Seat of Yahweh God, just saying!).

Citing Scriptures should not, at least in the mind of Christians, be understood as an attack or assault on anyone, even if it is a reference to the original chosen people (read Romans 9:1 through 11:32).

Atemi may be the same Atemi from CARM, one of the most vicious anti-Catholic websites on the Internet.

Wherever he’s from, until he and others like him prove that their interpretation of Scripture is infallible, it’s just opinion – mere opinion – one opinion among thousands of conflicting and competing Protestant opinions about what the Scriptures mean.

Jesus didn’t leave us a Bible – He left us the Catholic Church as our teacher. The Church wrote what became the New Testament during the first Christian century and produced the Bible under the guidance of the Spirit when she was nearly 400 years old.

Atemi’s interpretations of the very Catholic Bible date no earlier than the 16th century.

Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways acknowledge Him and He will make your paths straight.”

Jesus spoke in metaphor. The authors of the Bible wrote in metaphor. We are asked to Love,
Trust and Listen to find the Kingdom within, where the Holy Spirit can speak to each of us intimately as to our own need and level of understanding. None can say with absolute certainty
exactly what each and every metaphor means. There is a reason for metaphor. Jesus does not want our love out of submission. He is not oppressive. He wants our friendship. Metaphor allows for us to develop our own relationship with Him through contemplation, engaging with His imagination that knows what each individual mind needs to reach the heart.

There is too much dissecting of Bible, Jesus, God…Does this represent trust, love and friendship? There is great reason for Mystery. If any claim to know exactly what each of those
metaphors (dictates) then why not claim to be Jesus, to be God?

To focus on "end times’ takes focus off of the message of mercy, compassion, love and
kingdom within. Given to St. Catherine of Siena…“I call the soul Heaven because I make
Heaven wherever I dwell. Memory, understanding and will, the three properties of the soul.”
Memory remembers the Love, understanding contemplates that Love and will aligns those
toward God, toward union. This is the lifting of the veil, the lifting of oppression to find the
Kingdom within.

If we were to know exactly when, exactly what, exactly…Jesus would have said it clearly when He was here with the Apostles. The things He did state clearly…Mercy, Love your neighbor as yourself, the Kingdom is within. Our closest neighbor is first God within us, for God is our Maker and anyone who creates knows their creation holds a piece of him/herself. We love
God, our closest neighbor within, we then love our soul (soul mates), we then love all other.
And it is okay to remember there is a difference between like and love. This is where mercy
compassion and forgiveness grow.

We are loosing track of what Revelations says: It does speak of an ‘evil’ women who is something entirely different to the Holy woman spoken of in Revelations 12.

A woman arrayed in purple and scarlet, with a golden cup in her hand, sits on a scarlet beast

I am trying to understand … In addition the Roman numerology adds up to 666 which is the marking of the beast. Help me to understand. I am very confused by this. Have been a part of the Catholic Church all my life and never realized this. I am 44 years old. And I do not understand what the 7 heads of the beast represent? Please help me with this.
One thing I have learned over the years, All the practices and teachings of the Roman Catholic Church are Scriptural, now:

“Those who do not understand numerals, do not understand the Bible” (St Augustine)

Six is the number of man, created on the sixth day…also the beasts of the earth were created the sixth day Gen 1:26 (ff)] (ff) = following phrases)
Code:
When something is stated 'Once' biblically it is important, 'Twice' very important and' three' times most important.
Based on Pythagoras teachings on numerals, in their relationship as the numbers they represent 500 B.C. The Hebrews adopted these expressions as early as 350 b.c.

#three is a totality, it is why we express God in Trinity, or thrice bless, #7 number of completion.

We are 6’s (beasts), until we become 7’s (complete in Christ)

Let’s go to the Bible, the numeral 666 is first used in 1Kings 10:14
“The gold that Solomon received every year weighed six hundred and sixty-six gold talents”
www.usccb.org/nab/bible/index.shtml

Which was an astronomical number back in the Day,“Twenty thousand times ten thousand, or two hundred millions” In this wealth Solomon becomes a tyrant and it leads to his apostacy.

Six biblically is the Number of man, 66 a powerful man, 666 a most powerful man or Mankind in itself.

The mark of the beast comes from 2 Maccabees 6:6 (ff)
2 The Gentiles filled the temple with debauchery and revelry; they amused themselves with prostitutes and had intercourse with women even in the sacred court. They also brought into the temple things that were forbidden,

so that the altar was covered with abominable offerings prohibited by the laws.

A man could not keep the sabbath or celebrate the traditional feasts, nor even admit that he was a Jew.

Moreover, at the monthly celebration of the king’s birthday the Jews had, from bitter necessity, to partake of the sacrifices, and when the festival of Dionysus* was celebrated, They were compelled to march in his procession, wearing wreaths of ivy.

At the suggestion of the citizens of Ptolemais, a decree was issued ordering the neighboring Greek cities to act in the same way against the Jews: oblige them to partake of the sacrifices,

and put to death those who would not consent to adopt the customs of the Greeks. It was obvious, therefore, that disaster impended.

*Dionysus the god of the grape harvest her symbol was IVY]

Gal 6:17
From now on, let no one make troubles for me; for I bear the marks of Jesus 13 on my body.

footnote/ comment on NAB Catholic study Bible [2nd edition Oxford press]

slaves were born branded by marks (stigmata) burned into their flesh to show whom they belonged; so also devotees of pagan gods. Paul implies that instead of outdated circumcision his body bears the scars of Apostolic labors…

3 Maccabees 2:27: He (Philopater/Ptolemy IV) proposed to inflict public disgrace upon the Jewish community, and he set up a stone on the tower in the courtyard with this inscription:
28: “None of those who do not sacrifice shall enter their sanctuaries, and all Jews shall be subjected to a registration involving poll tax and to the status of slaves. Those who object to this are to be taken by force and put to death;
29: those who are registered are also to be branded on their bodies by fire with the ivy-leaf symbol of Dionysus, and they shall also be reduced to their former limited status.”

As far as the anti Christ being the devil born incarnate… [like the ‘Rapture’ series] well there is no biblical precedent or foundation for them, but they sell and make great wealth for those that promote them.
Satan only destroys he creates nothing. So the beast may be a world leader, or more likely mankind itself.

As far as all those letters and numerology that Protestants employ (bias and unfair) you can take any of their famous preachers and use their method to show them as the anti-christ!) They take what we have and without fully understanding try to tear it down.

God bless,
John

I am trying to understand who the woman is dressed in purple and scarlet that is glittering with gold, precious stones and pearls and drinks from her golden cup filled with aboninatons and abonimal things written on her forehead. It seems to represent the Catholic Churchs Eucuristic Cup that we drink from and the Popes ceremonial head piece which when translated from Latin to English states Instead of God. Hi,

While scholars understand this city as Jerusalem (See Below), others suggest the city as Rome as is Babylon in 17:1-6

Revelations 11: 7 And when they have finished their testimony, the beast that ascends from the bottomless pit will make war upon them and conquer them and kill them,
Rev 11:8 and their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great city which is allegorically called Sodom and Egypt, where their Lord was crucified.

Sodom the symbolic Jerusalem which rejects God. The name sodom as it applies to jerusalem Isa 1:10, Jer 23:14, ezekiel 16:46-56, Egypt is associated with idolatry and is the land which God delivered the enslaved people of Israel, where also their Lord was Crucified.

a little more, from www.veritasbible.com/drb/compare/haydock/Apocalypse_11

The great city. Some understand any city where Christians are persecuted. Others by the following words, where also their Lord was crucified, will needs have to be understood Jerusalem, which they hold shall be rebuilt in the time of antichrist, and where by him shall be put to death Henoch and Elias. But others think it may be expounded of heathen Rome, which in a mystical sense might be called Sodom for its infamous crimes, and Egypt for its idolatries and superstitions, where Christ might be said to be crucified, not as to himself, but in his members, according to what he himself said, Mat. xxv. 40. “inasmuch as you did it to one of these, my least brethren, you did it to me.” Wi. — City; Jerusalem, which it is supposed will be the residence of antichrist, and filled with a great concourse of people. Menochius.

If you want to learn about Catholic Church teachings get the information from the Catholic Church, Protestants are biased against the Church (That’s their slant on their teachings), and they only get what they know about the Church from other protestants, which they don’t question, and think/believe is authoritative

God bless,

The woman is definitely representing Jerusalem. The seven heads are the empires she has fornicated with – Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Persia, Greece (John says ‘five are fallen’), Rome (John says ‘one is’), and then a seventh (John says ‘the other is yet to come.’) I believe the seventh is, without a doubt, the very empire I live in – the United States of America. Our ideals have rebuilt and repoisoned the people of Israel, our Judaic brethren, with hedonism, and fornication, sexual immorality, abortion, etc.

John said the eighth is ‘of the seven, and was, and is not, yet shall ascend from the bottomless pit.’ That ascension from the bottomless pit signifies the end of the figurative ‘millenium’ when Satan is loosed from the bottomless pit to gather nations to battle at Armageddon. The fact that the eighth is ‘of the seven, and was, and is not’ at the time John wrote that, means that the eighth is one of those first five heads, revived. That is why John also wrote of the head wound and how the beast was revived from a fatal head wound – one of those first five is going to revive after the seventh one finally dies.

Just my 2c,

😊

…interesting take on the US–I’ve always though of it as the kingdom from the North that would stand with the people of God; but after learning about planned parenthood’s affiliations with the various UN pro-death chapters and hearing from President Obama about the “new world order” where those who reject the pro-death systems will be excluded from membership and will be left to stand alone regardless of the impending crisis that they may face, coupled with the strong-arming that the UN (really planned parenthood and the global homosexual machine) is using to force weak nations to capitulate (Greece just recently came under the hammer: align or die!) and accept that “new world order” charter (yeah the one where Christianity never existed)… {I’m fuming as I type!} I can see how you can come to your conclusion… I would not give the US full credict though, Israel has always had the tendency to ignore Yahweh’ Commandment and follow the creatures around them!
