Dictionaries, online or not, are only useful if you are certain of the spelling of the words you are looking up…

But, surely, the Bible would have the correct spelling… What I want to know is how a retired man with over 2,000 posts could have gone on this long without knowing.

Nevertheless, if one has a difficulty such as dyslexia, even if a word is in front of you, it can be difficult to ‘see’ the correct sequence of letters in order to consult a dictionary.

Bill you could type your response in a word document spell check then just cut and paste in the reply box. You’ll look like an english teacher.

I think that most people here don’t care if every word is spelled correctly. If we can figure out what the poster means, it’s good enough.

It might seem unlikely that an adult male wouldn’t know what a eunuch is, but I’ve known some men who know very little about their own anatomy. As we’re aging and health problems become more common, I’m discovering that the public schools didn’t teach much anatomy during the 50’s and 60’s and that parents didn’t fill in the blanks. It’s tough, but you really have to hold your tongue when someone makes some dumb-sounding comment about his own anatomy. It’s not a lack of intelligence. It’s a lack of education.

FWIW, I’m related to a suma cum laude college graduate who can’t spell. Math major. 🙂

It does not matter to me how he spells either but he said he was feeling uncomfortable with his ability. I encouraged him to use the resources on his computer to help himself polish his thoughts. Truth be known I use the dictionary on my computer a lot. I was just trying to help. Was I being offensive?

And you know that “a lot” is two words! A rare thing. 👍

I don’t think your post was offensive. Some people get really nervous about posting their thoughts, because they’re afraid that their writing skills aren’t good enough. I haven’t seen any Shakespeares or Churchills on here yet, so no one should feel intimidated. 🙂

We all make mistakes. I start a thought, change my mind about how I’m going to say it, and end up posting a mix of both. Somehow everyone is able to wade through the mess and figure out what it was I meant to say.

There have only been a few times when I couldn’t figure out what someone was trying to say, and most of those posts were by people who aren’t native English speakers.
