We as Catholics know and accept that Jesus Christ was/is the word of God - so every word spoken by God was spoken by Him including those spoken to the OT prophets as “thus saith the Lord” - any comments - twinc

Personally I think most of the OT is made up and based on myth and legend. So I’m going to go with no. If everything in the OT was accurate, and Jesus is the same God as the God of the OT, why didn’t Jesus kill lots of people, as that seemed like something the God of the OT really liked to do.

That’s some rigorous exegesis there, partner.

For a Catholic answer: yes. The “Old Testament” God is also the Trinity, and we hear about God’s Word, we hear about the Spirit (and Wisdom). The Trinity is not as well defined, but still there.

good keep it coming as part of my purpose or mission is to allow Catholics to see for themselves what some Catholics do or do not believe or accept and so see what those who are supposed to preach and teach have or have not taught - btw do you think it was the ancient of days with his big white beard dangling in the dust climbed up Sinai in the heat of the day to give Moses the ten commandments whilst His idle teenage son was at home with his feet up watching television - just a thought - or did Jesus Christ give Moses the ten commandments - twinc

I don’t know. I don’t know if Moses ever existed or the Israelites were even enslaved.

I should like to quote the following scripture (Mark 10:5-6)

5"It was because your hearts were hard that Moses wrote you this law," Jesus replied. 6"But at the beginning of creation God 'made them male and female.

This is referring to Moses saying that you could write a certificate of divorce for your wife, but in the New Covenant, divorce is not permissible.

Thus where the OT differs from the NT, I always keep that in mind. The hearts of mankind were harder in those days, life was much more difficult. Jesus came to teach us the true and everlasting message. So I would disagree when you state that killing people is something that God likes to do. As Catholics, as Christians, we understand (or should understand) that God’s ways are mysterious.

“This is the beloved son in whom I am well pleased.”

Jesus did not say that he had no children.

God from God,light from light, true God from true God of one and the same being as the Father - btw Jesus as Adam had a beloved disciple as beloved son Abel “woman[wife]behold thy son…son behold thy mother” - twinc

No, I don’t think so, Jesus did not come here to establish reincarnation. Reincarnation is not good news, even to those who hold it to be true.

What drivel. What are you talking about

Jesus came here to do away with reincarnation and the like .This only happened at the resurrection,so up to then the only hope was in the likes of reincarnation and many another desperately seeking an answer etc - twinc

I agree with JeanneH…what are you talking about :D…are you saying that Jesus said ‘wife behold thy son’? you won’t find that in the CCC 😉

John 15:15 “…for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.”
John 8:28 “…as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.”

I think what he is trying to do is make a comparison between Jesus and Adam.
Jesus had a beloved disciple, John and while Jesus was dying on the cross he said Woman (Mary) behold thy son (John)
I got lost with Adam and and his son Able though

you had Abel right the first time so why have you disabled him here.Jesus out of respect shoud have addressed BVM as Mother but He addresses her as wife[as in old english parlance “this is my woman”].Abel was the son of the first Adam and Eve and Jesus and Mary are the second Adam and Eve,please note not according to me but the word of God - btw Adam according to the same Scriptures had no mother or father and was in fact the son of God[Lk.3:38] - twinc

If you want to understand the synergy between the Old and New Testaments, begin with Dei Verbum.
  1. However, since God speaks in Sacred Scripture through men in human fashion, (6) the interpreter of Sacred Scripture, in order to see clearly what God wanted to communicate to us, should carefully investigate what meaning the sacred writers really intended, and what God wanted to manifest by means of their words.
To search out the intention of the sacred writers, attention should be given, among other things, to “literary forms.” For truth is set forth and expressed differently in texts which are variously historical, prophetic, poetic, or of other forms of discourse. The interpreter must investigate what meaning the sacred writer intended to express and actually expressed in particular circumstances by using contemporary literary forms in accordance with the situation of his own time and culture. (7) For the correct understanding of what the sacred author wanted to assert, due attention must be paid to the customary and characteristic styles of feeling, speaking and narrating which prevailed at the time of the sacred writer, and to the patterns men normally employed at that period in their everyday dealings with one another. (8)

Early in the Church’s history there was a heretic called Marcion who believed that the Old Testament and New Testament revealed different gods.

newadvent.org/cathen/09645c.htm

It is against such early heresy that the Church has consistently taught, reinforced and emphasised the truth that there is continuity in Sacred Scripture. Any incongruity lies in a failure to understand the human element, historical and political context and literary genre.
Personally I think most of the OT is made up and based on myth and legend.
Again, it is about understanding in context. Some of the OT stories are epics, perhaps based on truths, perhaps allegorical stories that explain some deeply held truth about human existence. Being able to differentiate one from another depends largely on which literary genre the text belongs to.
So I’m going to go with no. If everything in the OT was accurate, and Jesus is the same God as the God of the OT, why didn’t Jesus kill lots of people, as that seemed like something the God of the OT really liked to do.
There are lots of answers to this question, my opinion is that the message God reveals to us about Himself starts like a whisper and grows stronger, until it is manifest in the Incarnation of Jesus Christ Himself. Inevitably, we had limited understanding initially. Certainly if you look at the leitmotif of the OT, it is the Jews making mistakes, getting in consistently wrong and God forgiving them and getting it wrong. In other words, there is a human perception of what God means and we know from history, that that is not alway what God means.
