Holy War: The Year the Muslims Took Rome

Few know about it, but it happened. A book published in the United States offers to the public the first comprehensive collection of the major documents on the theory and practice of jihad, from Mohammed until today.

by Sandro Magister,

ROMA, January 5, 2006 – A book published recently in the United States lifts the veil on a crucial aspect of Islam, one which too many understand poorly and know too little about: jihad, the holy war.

It is an aspect that meets with widespread silence, as if it were a taboo. Even among Christians, there are wide gaps on this topic in the general awareness of Church history.

An example? Many recall what happened in Rome, at St. Peter’s Basilica, the night of Christmas Day of the year 800. After the Mass, pope Leo III solemnly placed upon the head of Charlemagne the crown of the Holy Roman Empire.

Yes, all who know their Church history remember how the Mohammedans invaded Rome…

When 9/11 happened, I recalled it, and thought, "Had the Moslems had airliners in those days, they would have flown one into St. John Lateran Basilica…

Not to say that protesatnts would not have done the same…

tjmiller, you mean Protestant could also do the same thing to us?

Cyber Knight - one need only look at what happened in England after Henry VIII took over. All those abbeys in ruins.

You mean you concern for physical building rather than their faiths? But maybe since you and I live in a different culture, in my place protestants and catholic hand in hand helping each other. I amazed to see protestants website in the west talk bad about catholics and vice versa. Maybe in my place we do not have much time to think about the differences we have in Christ. Maybe in my place there is huge issue to be aware of rather than just being protestantphobia or catholicphobia lol. Anyway, I believe taking over Vatican will done by the mohamedan oneday. Wheres catholics are not aware anymore of the real teaching of Christ and believe sugarcoated story fm other faith that fill our brains today. 🙂

Umm, I think I have entered the twilight zone. Cyber Knight, I am Roman Catholic. I also have 50 some odd hours of history tucked away in my college education. I am of Irish ancestry too. (You do not want me to go off on a tangent about what the English did to my ancestors). I live amongst protestant fundementalists (i.e. northern south Louisiana - there is no Catholic church in my town. The nearest one is 5 miles to the west of me and there is a mission 5 miles to the east of me).

You posited the question whether or not protestants could act in the same way as Islamicists. I responded from history that indeed they could and cited to you the example of Henry VIII and what he did to the monasteries etc. So, yes, the protestants can do that which Islamicists can do today. It was not a matter of buildings, it was a matter of the wholesale ripping out and destruction of a way of life which set the stage for what was done later to my ancestors in Ireland.

You have obviously not read your history. The Moors were turned back in France by the Merovingian Franks at the Battle of Tours. You should also know about my own personal hero, Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar who stopped them in the kingdoms of Castille, Leon and Burgos. Please, go back and do a little research.

Urrm are you mad for what I just said? Why sound arogan?🙂 Ahh Ireland huh? Both catholic and protestant there should be ashamed;-) for what they have done in the name of religion, I havent read the so called ‘my history’ on your previous post. But I will take a look. My point is no matter your denomination is, (except JW and Mormon) we should be united. The biggest threat we are facing is much dangerous than only arguing difference dogmas in Christ. But like I say, its because we live in a different culture or place so the issue that arises among us is different. You with ‘protestanphobia’ :), me with my ‘islamophobia’

No, why should I be mad? I’m not being arrogant. I am simply approaching the situation with a depth of history behind me. The Catholics in Ireland have nothing to be ashamed of (other than not uniting in one cause to defeat the English) but, hey, that is the story of the Celtic world. I could make the same arguement in Scotland and in the southern United States during the Civil War.

Make no mistake about it. Islam spread very quickly across the northern coast of Africa, up into Spain and was turned back in France at the Battle of Tours. I am doing nothing more than reciting history. And as someone of Irish ancestry, I have good cause to remember what the protestants did to the land of my ancestors.

Cyber Knight, I have a baccalaureate degree in History. I have a baccalaureate degree in Anthropology. I have a master’s degree in Anthropology. I am a medievalist at heart. I really believe that I know quite a bit more about history than you. I really don’t know where you are coming from but if you want, I can fill you in on what happened after the Battle of Tours , you know the reconquista thing in Spain. I believe that there is a terrible threat to the western world from Islam. Again, I know my history but I simply do not understand where you are coming from.

Thank you 🙂

Sure, let me know about it. Would be great for such a less knowledge of history person like me 🙂

Agree with you. Let me ask you one simple question, just say YES or NO without reason. Do you wish ecumenism to happen between Christian denominations including Catholic Church to be One Body of Christ?

Yes. Jesus intended us to be one. It was his greatest prayer.

Cyber Knight. I still think I am misunderstanding you. The original poster makes reference to the Saracen attack on Rome. You came back and asked if the next poster thought that protestants could do this. I responded in the affirmative because history is full of protestant atrocities against Catholics. And we Catholics are not without our share of guilt either. But ask someone of Acadian ancestry (like me) and there are several of us on this forum and ask any of the Irish on this forum how they feel about what the English did to them simply because they were Catholic. This is not to say that we harbor any hatred against the English but it does point out that protestants were as capable in the past of committing atrocities as are the Islamicists today. I am not fearful of protestants but I am terribly worried about what will happen when Islamic terrorists get hold of a nuke.

Let me tell you something my friend. My father was an evangelical protestant so your argument about my “protestantphobia” doesn’t carry water. In addition, if you could have been here in Louisiana in September you would have seen Catholics, Protestants and Jews working together to provide aid for all the evacuees from New Orleans. To be ignorant of history is to repeat the mistakes of the past.

Brotherhrofl, good points! Could we continue the thread as per original topic?🙂

my statements about christians and catholics in my place was not intended to you personally. how ever im happy if you have more knowledge about history. what do you mean to be ignorant of history is to repeat mistakes of the past? If that word for me, i take it LOL but we also must not forget Church made mistake in the past thats causing what we call Protestant today. 🙂

Have you read Trinity, I don’t rrememer the author? It’s about the English in Ireland.

Wow. Some of the posts in this thread are…disappointing, to say the least. :nope:

Cyber: To be ignorant of history is to repeat the mistakes of the past is a well-known proverb. Your English is very good but unless I am mistaken English is not your first language. I really apologize to you. However, I do believe that there was a tremendous amount more to the Protestant Reformation than the Church’s mistakes at that time.

Yes, I have read Leon Uris’ Trinity and a slew of other books about Ireland. I defer to my Irish brothers and sisters on this Forums since my Irish ancestors came to the US before the Famine.

Yes, I would like to go back to the original point which is that most people of western culture are blissfully unaware that Islam was a dire threat to European culture all throughout the Middle Ages and Rennaissance.

We are talking at cross purposes. Let’s try to rectify the language problem first.

English is not my first language, I know what you were saying was a proverb. but I believe there is always a meaning behind it thats why you put it at the end of your sentence. :). Back to thread, I couldnt more agree with you. The questions arise now, will the Vatican be taken over by the Muslims? Is it possible? What are we going to do next? Is it real threat to Catholic Church or is it jus our Islamophobia?

This has happened already, as in the past tents, and isn’t merely conjecture. The actual invasion of the Vatican occured in 846 AD, though sadly it isn’t common knowledge among most.

I suggest you read the article chiesa.espressonline.it/dettaglio.jsp?id=44479&eng=y

I may forgot to add AGAIN in my question #1 on my previous post. But thanks for the info. my muslims friend told me, indeed, Islam will rule the world by taking over the Vatican first. so I do not talking past. I refer it fm the topic with the info I got fm muslims. What you as catholics think about it? Didnt you read cute2904s footnote?
