The year of the Eucharist is over... so now what?

So last liturgical year was proclaimed the year of the Eucharist, and the year before that was like the year of Mary or the Rosary or something of that matter.

Does the pope always proclaim the year with a focus of a particular devotion?

I’ve been kind of wondering. I loved the year of the Eucharist (and it was the year I was baptised, confirmed, married, and recieved my first communion and did my first confession) and so I was just wondering if this liturgical year had been named anything?

Thanks!

As far as I know, most year’s are not called anything in paticular- but I may be wrong. Growing up Catholic, I don’t remember “years of” anything until the Rosary and Eucharist…

i guess 2005 was declared year of the eucharist just to remind us the importance of the eucharist in the life of the church. It doesn’t mean that eucharist must be given importance this year but all throught the life of the church.

As of yet the 2006 liturgical year as not been proclaimed as anything special now there was a suggestion made by a bishop during the synod that the Pope make 2006 a Year of Penance to emphasize Confession but I don’t think it was considered seriously to bad would’ve been nice if they did.

10 years ago, we had the Year of the Family…
and we also had 3 consecutive years of Year of the God the Father, the Holy Spirit and the Savior, Jesus Christ. So perhaps a declaration will be considered for future celebrations.
However, the good thing that has remained at our home parish, is that now once a week we have adoration of the Holy Eucharist, and for that I am eternally grateful.
Praise God always!

Father Altier, I think, mentioned the other day on the radio that these “years of…” are actually quite rare so we shouldn’t get used to expecting them on any regular basis. Apparently JP the Great was guided by the Spirit to call for the Rosary and Eucharst given the urgency of the times.

We’ll have to wait to see what the Spirit calls for next.

  • I would say this year is a good year to take inventory of what God has revealed to you and me concerning The Eucharist.
A good starting point (diving board) is Ephesians 1: 17…
"May the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of Glory, grant you a spirit of wisdom and insight to know Him clearly.
May He enlighten your innermost vision
that you may know the great Hope to which He has called you,
the wealth of His glorious heritage to be distributed
among the members of the church.
and the immeasurable scope of His power in us who believe." …

God Bless,
