Chant IS used in horror movies!

And like it or not, I tend to associate chanted music with horror movies. I also tend to associate Southern Gospel and Christian rock music with beautiful, inspiring worship!

Oh, well, I was under the impression that you are a music director at a Catholic parish. Sounds like I am wrong!
You just sound a teensy bit like you don’t care for chant, polyphony, etc (the music called for in Vatican II documents), but as long as you aren’t the one who does the programming, to each his own!
As you say “you can’t deny your upbringing”, which is why I find it so sad when I see the same songs being perpetuated at Mass that don’t really belong there. Because then there’s another generation of Catholics that think that the St. Louis Jesuits are the best we have to offer.

My personal opinion is that the position of the Catholic Church about liturgical music is marvelous! There is liberty with boundaries, at least in the OF Mass, and this means that a priest can allow the music directors a free hand to select from 2000 years of music–and that 2000 years includes 1960 through 2019!

I personally like a variety of music in Mass (or in a Protestant worship service). One of the reasons, IMO, that Protestant Evangelical communities struggle to hold onto their congregations is that they divide them up into “Classic” or "Traditional, and “Contemporary.”

This is not good. Older people need to hear and appreciate (not necessarily like) the music that young people like, and younger people desperately need to hear and sing the music that their grandparents and further back sang.

Sacred music connects all of us Christians–and yes, this includes the Protestants who didn’t find their back to the Catholic Church or have yet to find their back to the Catholic Church. Music helps us to understand each other.

I don’t think I would mind chant as much if it were “part” of the Mass, but not the entire Mass. To me, chant is just too monotonous and I have a very difficult time with no regular melody (Disney kid!–I like my songs to have strong melodies!). JMO, of course. But I like variety in liturgical music. Again, JMO! I’m not saying that this is the way it should be or else.
