Theism is Rational; Christianity is Not

Hi Aristotle. Forgive me for not reading through the whole thread (and so I apologise if someone already mentioned this), but something in your OP struck me. You said:
Omnipotence is all-power, infinite potential, the ability to do and be anything. Only nothing is omnipotent. God has no potential, for anything that God could do God does.
Does that then mean that God cannot choose to not do something? Surely then, that means God is not omnipotent?

That would be correct, given the presuppositions. Though I would encourage you to read the post above your own before responding in too detailed a manner.

Wow! I should apologise - I came upon this thread late last night (my time) and decided to comment on the first post without reading through the whole thread like I should have. That’s always a mistake.

I wish you the best of luck (and prayers) on your journey.

After having talked with a Monsignor for about a month, after having debated some things here, and on other forums, and after the wise and kind council from some of the members here, I have decided to go through RCIA with the intent to become Catholic.

As I believe in God as more than Aristotle’s concept (though Aristotle’s god is still useful, I think, as a starting point), the argument here is forfeit.

As I also am gay, my main concern will be to reconsile my lifestyle with what God wants from me.

Thank you all again for your time and support. I had to make one last-ditch effort for Aristotle’s god before moving on. I feel sad about it, and happy too.

So God bless (sounds strange to say that, what else would He do?)
This is the best news I have heard in a while! Thank you for sharing with us part of your journey. It was a priviledge to see it. I do apologize for making you look schizophrenic in an earlier post. I am still learning how to get the hang of this.

My position was schizophrenic. A common malady when in the middle of changing one’s mind.

You made me seem as I was. And still am, to a degree.

From most probably one of the most unwise Catholics here, that being me, I can only say…

…I am speechless in my admiration of you for seeing truth.

Most love always on you, Ari…! Aloha nui loa 'oe…!

</me blots eyes to avoid embarrassing questions from onlookers>

Mahalo ke Akua…!
E pili mau na pomaikai ia oe. Aloha nui.

E pili mau na pomaikai ia oe. Aloha nui to you as well.

Thank you for your kind words.

(Hawaiian, is it not?)

It is very likely that God, a single being, exists, where God is defined as that which cannot be perceived, and from this definition and certain assumptions has the characteristics of being the best thing, thought thinking itself. “God is in a better state. And life also belongs to God; for the actuality of thought is life, and God is that actuality; and God’s self-dependent actuality is life most good and eternal. We say therefore that God is a living being, eternal, most good, so that life and duration continuous and eternal belong to God; for this is God.” (Aristotle, Metaphysics Lambda, Trans. Ross)

God, defined in this manner, can be defended, and this God I accept. But the Christian God I cannot. God had no son, no mother, does not write books, and indeed has no power to move things, but moves all things only by attraction.

Omnipotence is all-power, infinite potential, the ability to do and be anything. Only nothing is omnipotent. God has no potential, for anything that God could do God does.
I dont really understand Deism, I dunno much about Voiltare but I think he made up his doctrine just because he was against the catholic church. however when he was dying he was rushing for a priest to give him the sacraments in order to die in peace.
So I dunno whether he was faithful to the Deism that he established.

In my opinion, there is not a real explanation for why the creator and the creature have to be completely away from each other, it is a radical thought.

I believe the reason that God created the creature, is becuase he loves the creature, and therefore if he loves the creature I dont understand why he has to be completely away from him.
leaving him abandoned and hopeless in a world in which pain, misfortunes and all kind of miserys have no apparent meaning nor reason at all to exist.

The mistery of the cross however, gives a clear meaning and a good explanation for all the misfortunes that we all have in our human nature.
