Then they cast lots, and the lot fell to Matthias

St Matthias

Celebrated on May 14th

(Please Note: This uploaded content is no longer available.)

Matthias was chosen by the apostles, to fill the place left vacant by Judas Iscariot. He was with them at Pentecost. According to legend he preached in Judea and then Cappadocia and near the Caspian Sea.

Tradition also links him with Ethiopia. His history is sometimes confused with that of Matthew and Andrew. It is claimed that St Matthias the Apostle’s remains are interred in the Abbey of St Matthias in Trier, Germany, brought there through Empress Helena, mother of the Emperor Constantine.

According to Greek sources, the remains of the apostle are buried in the castle of Gonio-Apsaros, Georgia. Since 1969, his feast has been celebrated on this day.

(from ICN)

There is a tradition that he was stoned to death in the region of Colchis, now in modern-day Georgia.
St Matthias, pray for us!

(I go along with all the previous requests for his intercession).

If he was an apostle, why wasn’t the next chosen successor considered an apostle? It seems likely the next chosen successor (any Legends as to who that was?) would also have heard Christ’s teaching and formation.

I know St Paul was an apostle, but not chosen as such the way Matthias was.

Also interesting is that this is the last time in the Bible casting lots was used to determine God’s will. After this came Pentrcost after which they relied directly on the Holy Spirit.

You say this as though the outcome of the casting of lots was not the direct influence of the Holy Spirit. :man_shrugging:t3:

Peace!!!

You know what i mean.

Yes, my understanding of porthos11’s observation is that after the Spirit was sent, it entered the minds and hearts of the disciples, aligned their will with God’s will, led them to truth as Jesus promised, and so on.
