Hi all:

I’ll soon be finishing Frank Sheed’s wonderful “Theology for Beginners” - and I was wondering what steps should I take next in terms of theology? I know, somewhere down the line, I’ll need ot read St. Thomas Aquinas’s “Summa,” but is it too early to delve into something like that? What would be some good books to get me started. Thanks! 😃

With no knowledge of your backround the best advice I could give is to get the story of the Bible down. Because evreything hangs on the story. So if you haven’t already you should look into Jeff Cavin’s bible study. It’s easy and effective.
Then I would go through the CCC with a bible.
After that I would get a good book on the history of the church and study the heresies throughout history.
Then I would start with Scott Hahn’s book A father who keeps his promises and then the othe Hahn books.
But it depends on where you are now and what you are most interested in.

Oh, lol, I am quite “advanced” in terms of the things you’ve suggested. However, while I am familiar with the story of the Bible and the CCC, I will look into that Bible study book.

In terms of my background, I graduated from college in 2004 with a degree in Religious Studies, with much of my concentration being on early and Byzantine Christianity. However, I have no great background in theology. Much of my knowledge is historical, and I would like to take up more theology.

Thanks again! 😃

I think I’d like to go ahead and invest in St. Thomas’s “Summa Theologica,” but I know the whole work can be found online at New Advent. So, is it worth spending $150 for? Or should I invest in something like “Summa of the Summa” first?

Have you looked into the other book by Frank Sheed’s called Theology and Sanity? I read *Theology for Beginners *and loved it and his other book is on the way as we speak. I don’t know how much is over lapped between the two books, but I know a lot of people recommended it to me.
