For starters, I couldn’t post this on the book club forum, otherwise I would have, I hope it is okay I post it here.

So, a couple weeks ago I thought I would get my parents and younger brother and I this book. I wanted to give this book to my mom for Mother’s Day and my dad for Father’s Day. Now, I’m having my doubts on whether this will go down well. Neither one of my parents are practicing Catholics. My mom was not raised in the catholic faith and doesn’t seem to agree with the teachings that we discuss. She did ask to read the book How to Find Your Soulmate without Losing Your Soul by Jason and Crystalina Evert, but I don’t think she has read the book and she’s had it for a year. While I was reading the book Theology For the Body For Beginners I mentioned a part to her that my father disagreed with, but my mother liked and agreed with, and since my brother is a teenager and has girlfriends and all my parents tell him is to not get her pregnant and to use a condom, I felt it would be a good idea for them to have this book and hopefully read it and take it to heart and teach it to my brother. However, the last discussion we just had my mom said she doesn’t agree with the teachings of the church and they don’t matter to her, and my dad said he thought the Church put too much emphasis on the sacraments and that a person should chose which church they feel most comfortable with, which I responded, “Just remember almost all of the other christian churches are watered down versions of the Catholic Church.” And we left it at that. But these books are in the mail, and I’m wondering how I should go about giving them these gifts. If I give it to them, do you have any ideas of how I can approach them with these books/gifts?

I think you’ve just wasted your money. 😦 Giving books like Theology of the Body to people whose minds are not open, whose hearts are closed…Well, you’re not going to get the response you are hoping for. Your brother is extremely unlikely to remain a Catholic in such an atmosphere. What a shame that your father doesn’t even recognize our sacraments as the most important part of our faith! They were each and every one instituted by Christ himself! Maybe you could start there instead of the sexual teachings. For some reason, most people simply shut down when they hear what God wants us to live when it comes to our sexuality. But perhaps your father has forgotten his catechism about the sacraments.

You will be in my prayers. When the books come, maybe you could donate them to your parish youth group?

While I agree that the books will probably not be well received by the original recipients, they might be saved as gifts for other friends, sold, traded, donated, etc. Not a total loss-- good books, someone will definitely want them. 🙂

Agree, I should have said, “You’ve wasted your money if you’re thinking your parents and brother are going to read these books.”

Someone else may pop up in the OP’s life that needs them, or she could donate them to the parish young adults group.

That’s a bummer. I was really hoping that it would “plant some seeds” if you will. That maybe they might come around. I really wish they would become enlightened parents and teach my brother the right way on how to go about things.

I know, and I’m sure it’s hard on you to watch your parents fail to instruct your brother. But trust me, buying books for others when they haven’t requested them, especially ones like Theology of the Body just won’t work the way you want it to.

Maybe you could sow your own seeds with your brother (talk about chastity, etc.) and then invite him to read it with you?

🤷
