Theology of Body

Hi All
Forgive me if I am posting this in a wrong category. I have heard many people discussing and debating on the “Theology of Body” by Bl Pope John Paul II.

I am keen to read this work but whenever I try to search online to buy a copy of the book Theology of Body I don’t see anything original. It is always the extractions, excerpts or theology of body explained, for teens, for her and for him etc.

Is there a complete work called theology of body ? Where can I buy an unabridged version ? Or is it a collection of speeches and observations by the Late Pope which are arranged later by someone else ?

Just to warn you, it gets a bit tedius to read. Why? Because each talk works like this:

First he tells you a little bit about what he’s going to say
Then he says it
Then he tells you a about what he’ll cover next time

next one
He summarizes what he just said, he tells you a little bit about what he’s going to say
Then he says it
then he tells you about what he’ll cover next time

etc, etc. Repetition, repetition…and soon you’re off like “aaahh…this is so slow to read its driving me crazy!”

Keep in mind though, that the reason they are organized like that is that he did not necessarily write them to be read. A lot of them were given verbally, in his public Wednesday audiences. He probably repeated that way because he knew that not everyone came every week.

All of them, to my understanding, were given verbally. They are a series of addresses. As such, you have to consider each one as an essay of its own complete with introduction and summary. Perhaps a good way to pace yourself is to read only one a week. They’re pretty short, but that might might it at least feel more natural. The study group I was involved in had us read about 4 or 5 before we’d meet again to discuss them.

The Theology of the Body consists of 129 general audiences given by Pope John Paul II from 1979-1984.

All of the audiences that make up the Theology of the Body are also available on EWTN’s website. I have collected and organized all the links on my own website:

Yes, they may indeed be short, which is a plus considering how much theological meat and insight Blessed JPII has packed into each one. I’ve found myself, while reading these, going back and re-reading sentences, paragraphs and the whole thing again just to follow what he’s saying or to truly digest his line of argument.

They are an incredible work and deserve to have a large amount of time spent on them reading them and meditating on them.
