I’m serious here. 😊

While teaching TOB for teens, on the topic of “Naked without Shame” (Adam and Eve before they sinned) versus “Shameless” (flaunting your nakedness/sexual values)…
I posed the question:
Give me an example of “shameless” in the modern world.
A student suggested “Going to Hooters.” Well, I had to agree. 🤷

Then the students started to giggle, and mentioned to me that their former youth leader said she went to Hooters often, and brought her children. But they went** for the food.** I was stumped, not wanting to say anything about the former teacher who I didn’t know. I thought this was general knowledge. I honestly don’t know any faithful Christians (Catholic or Protestant) who would go to Hooters.

Help me out here, please.
  • Is it shameless to go to Hooters?
  • Would it be shameless to work at Hooters?
  • Would it be different for a male and female/children attending Hooters?
  • What would you say to this group of students?

Went to Hooters for the food. Riiiiiight. And I’ve got prime real estate in Florida to sell you.

Let’s be frank. THE attraction of Hooters is…well…young women showing off their hooters. No secret there. So:

Shameless to go to Hooters? Let’s just say if it was the only restaurant open and one was very hungry, probably not. Otherwise, there are other choices that don’t feature what Hooters does.

Shamless to work there? If one had to do it to feed the family, fine. Otherwise, to put one’s body on display for tips…shameless, methinks.

Working in the kitchen? Different matter, as long as ogling the waitstaff was not part of one’s daily work routine.

Different for boys/girls? No.

What would I say to them? That I have a different opinon of what passes for shameless, and that going there “for the food” is a lame excuse.

Thank you NEWBIE2!!!

As a female, nothing compels me to go to Hooters. Personally I feel only compassion on the women who work there, and quite frankly, disgust for the lustful men who say they are there for the food.

I don’t want my own visceral reactions to get in the way of Pope John Paul II’s message of human dignity and purity of heart.

Thanks,

SURE HOPE MORE FOLKS CAN ANSWER, as I will be sharing the best responses with my students tonight!

Me for instance, I go every other weekend with my girlfriend.

Commercials make it seem so, but the reality is from the first time I went, through my sin I did actually look around. I found most of them extraordinarily unattractive. A significant number were in their late 20’s or early 30’s. Add to that, a lot were flat chested, or had barely any Hooters at all.

Not true at all. I go there for the wings, and until you have personally gone there to eat their wings. You can not possibly understand. They have absolutely FANTASTIC wings. This, is not a lie. They really do have great wings.

Shamless to work there? If one had to do it to feed the family, fine. Otherwise, to put one’s body on display for tips…shameless, methinks.

I give a dollar, like I would in Denny’s, Sizzler, and most restaurants. I did not give anything special.🤷

Most likely. Some teens do I suppose to look at women. But if they wanted to look at women, they would see more in their School Cheerleading Squad than Hooters. And that’s a fact.

Because you assume it’s for disgusting perverted men. In reality, theres a lot of women that go there just to eat. I go there for the food, and as far as I am concerned. I am a chaste man, and I respect women as I would my mother.

Instead, it’s best you see for yourself and eat there.

I gave up going to Hooters several years ago due to the immodest involved. But I will tell you that I really missed their buffalo wings.

There were several times where I was quite tempted to send my wife for take out wings, but really didn’t want to support the chain either.

But then BW3 opened up near our house and all is now right with the world 🙂

But yes, the buffalo wings ARE very good.

There are 2 Hooters near me. I have been only once, about 5 years ago. I was healping a customer with a job & he wanted tro buy me lunch. I’m a major “foodie” so I was turned off by the enormas fried menu. Later I learned from a girl that used to work there that the place is just a strip joint without the stripping. The girls put on a fake from the time they hit the clock. Very few enjoy the job, but they need the money. The pressure to please the customer is almost unbearable.

Hooters is a disgusting chain. Buy your hot wings somewhere else. Anyone who takes her children to such a place is giving them the impression that the objectification of women is ok.

JLSamuel,
Have you read Theology of the Body or Love and Responsibility?

I’m not sure if you understand my question.

My question is based on the difference between being “Naked without Shame” as Adam and Eve were before Original Sin, and being shameless.

While you are proud of going to Hooters, and claim to be a chaste man, are you possibly confusing chastity with celibacy?

In the context of the Theology of the Body, it seems to me that you are shameless in promoting Hooters as an eating establishment, regardless of how it treats women and leads men into sexual sin.

If you go every other weekend with your girlfriend, (I don’t know any woman who would accept being treated to a date at Hooters)…, perhaps you are so used to it that you no longer recognize the original echo in your heart that says, “hey, wait a minute…”

In my teaching of teenagers, I am hoping to help them recognize that still small voice, before it’s nearly snuffed out by the world.

Seriously?
Ugh.
There’s a strip bar near my house that has $7 PRIME RIB!!!
Me loves some prime rib, especially for $7.
I’m still not going.

How did your presentation to the students go, graceandglory? On account of your thread and that I’ve heard from more than one person about the good wings, and that I’d never set foot in the restaurant, I went to the website for it to get a feel for it. Less than edifying. :nope: No trips to Hooters for me.

Is it shameless to go to Hooters?

Yes.

Would it be shameless to work at Hooters?

Yes.

Would it be different for a male and female/children attending Hooters?

No.

What would you say to this group of students?

Get your mind out of the gutter. God created you for Heaven, and you’ll miss Heaven if you pursue sins of the flesh.

Anyone who would take their children, most especially a young girl, to Hooters needs their head examined. Talk about teaching your children the wrong message.

I predict others will reply defending Hooters, let the games begin…

They do not objectify women. Women willingly out of their own free will work there.

Ah…

While you are proud of going to Hooters, and claim to be a chaste man, are you possibly confusing chastity with celibacy?

Not proud of going there, it’s mutual. Frankly, I can care less.

In the context of the Theology of the Body, it seems to me that you are shameless in promoting Hooters as an eating establishment, regardless of how it treats women and leads men into sexual sin.

I do not promote Hooters to be honest as an eating establishment. I believe they chose a terrible way to make themselves look appealing in their commercials. Their food is great, but the background ideal is not. Nevertheless. Women work there willingly, and they are properly respected by staff, and by the customers I see.

If you go every other weekend with your girlfriend, (I don’t know any woman who would accept being treated to a date at Hooters)…, perhaps you are so used to it that you no longer recognize the original echo in your heart that says, “hey, wait a minute…”

To be honest, she introduced me to it. She told me about the wings, I was a skeptic by her claims. Went, ate, and was indeed satisfied. Just another eating facility like Sizzler. But like Sizzler, Dennys, and alot of restaurants. The waiters are women.

In my teaching of teenagers, I am hoping to help them recognize that still small voice, before it’s nearly snuffed out by the world.
*Your obviously a good woman, and proud that you do a good deed to plant a seed of faith in your students. So that they may understand the right, and wrongs. Really, I admire what you do.

With much respect and grace,

Your judging, it is not your place. That belongs to God. In that case, do not take any children to any restaurant. Because most waiters are women anyway.

With peace and love.

I’ve never been to Hooters, but after hearing about their “awesome” wings for so long, I got to have them via takeout at a work function. I was not impressed. BW3 is much better.

That same day at work, we all got to talking about husbands/boyfriends wanting to go to Hooters “for the wings”. Every woman there had heard it before and we all rolled our eyes. LAME.

I do the Hooters girls a favor and stay away, I don’t want to make them jealous. 😃

Nice, Pug. Thanks, good doggy. 😉

Now, here’s a website to get a feel for ToB.👍

I’ve also heard from a converted Catholic adult that the wings aren’t all that.

🤷

Samuel, I see that you have quoted John Paul II for your signature. You might be interested to study what he has written on the Theology of the BODY. Our bodies are a theology. By studying why God made us bodily as male and female, it points us toward Him and toward heaven.

God is so good, I was looking up what John Paul II said about what is objectifying,
and I found an article on this very topic. This is straight from the themes in Theology of the Body on SHAME and Shamelessness, and incorporates it with his writing of Objectification in Love and Responsibility.

holyspiritinteractive.net/columns/edwardpsri/loveandresponsibility/09.asp

Please read it, and you will get a little taste of what our bodies are meant for.
Our bodies are created in order to inspire LOVE and not lust.

Can you read this article, and let me know how we could apply the lesson in this article to going to Hooters?
