I read an article from The Remnant that seemed to be blasting JPII’s ‘theology of the body’ and one of its chief proponents, Christopher West. What do people on this TradCath forum think?

I accept Vatican II so I can’t be labeled traditionalitst, although I think I’m very traditional in most respects.

I think Theology of the Body is a great pedagogical development in evangelizing about sexual ethics in the Church.

In a nutshell, TOB sees human sexuality as positive and part of the divine plan of complete mutual self giving.

I think what upsets the Trads is that JPII uses a personalist, quasi mystical approach in explaining Catholic sexual ethics. He takes his cues from St. John of the Cross.

If they don’t prefer that, b/c it’s not a Thomist approach, that’s fine.
But, to question the orthodoxy of the teaching on that basis I think is wrong.

I Googled that *Remnant *article, and found within it the following statement:

“I remember an old Jesuit from my college days counseling his students that the pursuit of sanctity within the married state must inevitably lead to a weaning away from the marital privilege, the idea being that spiritual pursuits must take precedence over all else as we age and prepare to face the judgment of the Almighty.”

I don’t think you have to be a rabid fan of TOB to think this opinion is wrong at so many levels: The marital embrace inconsistent with sanctity? Fear of Judgment because of the right use of the marital privilege within the bonds of a sacramental marriage? Couples becoming physically distant from each other as they age, in the name of “spiritual pursuits?” It would have been interesting to know at what age that “old Jesuit” thought things should start “weaning away.” I don’t believe even Castii Connubii taught this, let alone the more modern Magisterial documents on the family, or the CCC. Does the Church in fact teach this – that all marriages should, in effect, become Josephite marriages as people age (not that Nature doesn’t already help that along anyway)😦 ???

Ok, that’s good. That article was kind of confusing really. I mean, the ToB is really what explained to me and brought me back in line with a lot of orthodox Catholic belief, I’m not sure where I’d stand if that was taken away lol.
