Theology of "will" and "intellect"

There are many different theologies (Theology of the Body is an example). I’ve been told there are two ways of approaching obedience – one based on something like following according to your “will” and another according to your “intellect.” I may have the language wrong but it was definitely will or intellect and there are theologies for each, the names of which I do not remember. Does anyone know anything about this and can you direct me to sources about it that aren’t too terribly hard to understand?

The basic idea is that, the two (will and intellect) have two different objects for their “appetite.” The will has for its object the good or goodness, and the intellect has for its object the true or truth. Objects are presented to the person - say, a pizza - and the intellect at once apprehends it, and, since it apprehends some particular good about the object (i.e. it tastes good), the will desires it. The will, however, also has the power to “move itself” so to speak. It can will that the intellect further consider the pizza, and, in such a scenario, the intelllect apprehends that, although it is tasty, it is bad for ones health. The will, perceiving this greater good, finally wills not to eat the pizza.

The more complex aspects of the issue lie in the fact that the will can move the intellect, and the intellect can move the will, and this is why the person is its own causal agent. The intellect can potentially will an infinite amount of things, and yet does not necessarily will any of them, since all things are good under a certain aspect. This is true of the will only in this life, since it does not see God in his essence, which is good in every aspect. The “gap,” so to speak, between the unlimited and irresistible good, and particular goods, which are presented under varying perceptions, is what makes man “free” and makes choice “free” and not necessary, for all things in this life can always appear desirable under one aspect, or not desirable under another.

This is all Thomistic philosophy. It is also worth pointing out that sin occurs when the will fails to will adequately a good that it ought to will. For instance, Adam failed to have recourse to the divine aid, and instead “let himself” will a particular good, when he ought to have willed the good of obedience. Instead, due to an inordinate love of self (which is always possible to a being who is a self, and to a created being which must make an act of self-surrender), he failed to observe the command. His intellect, seeing the good of the apple, ought to have been further moved by his will to consider the command (sort of like our will further considers the consequences of eating pizza). The sufficient grace given to him was resisted though, and he became swollen with pride and fell. Consequently, he lost his integral nature, and passed along a distorted will and intellect to his progeny.

This is a lovely psalm, but can you explain how this addresses my question if that was indeed your intent?
