The calendar of the Ruthenian Church seems to have eliminated the fast for this year, because the eve of Theophany falls on a Sunday. My pastor says that the fast should have been moved to Friday this year, and has instructed us to treat Friday as a fasting day. Is it possible that there was just a printing error in the calendar, or was it a deliberate decision on the part of the bishops?

Note: I am not arguing with my pastor’s judgement in this regard and intend to obey his instructions. I’m just wondering how this usually works

Good plan 🙂

Well, we aren’t Ruthenian, as you know… 🙂 We were told Sunday will be a strict fast and on the wall calendar we’re all given, Revised Julian from St Tikhon’s Monastery Press that’s how it is shown. This whole current week including Friday is fast free for us.

There is a bit of a discussion on monachos.net.

I would have thought it was a Russian thing, but Phoebe K. on that thread mentions the calendar she says “Metropolitan Killos Ware” approved and “although it is normally a strict fast on the eve of theophony as it falls on a Sunday this year the fast is lessened to wine and oil permitted.” Met Kallistos isn’t Russian Orthodox. Maybe Archimandrite Irenei (Steenberg) will weigh in on the topic on that forum since he was a founder.

Our calendar says that Friday is fast free as well, but the Royal Hours are prayed on Friday and those would normally done on the eve of the Feast. 🤷 There are obviously variations on the practice.

Indeed. Thus your preference to follow what your priest counsels your parish to do. Do you think the Greeks are fasting at all? 😉 Well, I will perhaps find out/ask because I plan to be with them for Jan 1st.

The Byzantine USA rules for Theophany are fast and abstinence on the vigil, but no fast and abstinence Jan 1 through 4, and Royal Hours is only on a weekday. So the schedules are:

Tuesday through Saturday Theophany
1/5/2009 Mon – Royal Hours + abstinence + Vigil DL of Theophany
1/5/2010 Tue – Royal Hours + abstinence + Vigil DL of Theophany
1/5/2011 Wed – Royal Hours + abstinence + Vigil DL of Theophany
1/5/2012 Thu – Royal Hours + abstinence + Vigil DL of Theophany
1/5/2007 Fri – Royal Hours + abstinence + Vigil DL of Theophany

Sunday Theophany (also occurred in 2008)
1/4/2013 Fri – Royal Hours (transferred from Sat) + no fast or abstinence (Jan 1-4)
1/5/2013 Sat – DL or Vespers for Vigil of Theophany (no fast or abstinence Saturday)

Monday Theophany
1/3/2014 Fri – Royal Hours (transferred from Sun) + no fast or abstinence (Jan 1-4)
1/5/2014 Sun – DL or Vespers for Vigil of Theophany (no fast or abstinence Sunday)

Completely off topic: Great to see you again, Vico. 🙂
Good to hear from you!

The question was “Is it possible that there was just a printing error in the calendar, or was it a deliberate decision on the part of the bishops?” Please explain how it is off topic.

I’m answering, from the approved Metropolitan Church calendars which I have, approved for those years, showing the rule actually followed.

This is one of those years where the rules and the calendar don’t quite work as well together.

LOL! My comment about “completely off topic:” was my saying it’s good to see you posting again. It wasn’t that you’d said anything at all off topic. 🙂

Oh! Yes, its late here, I missed the obvious.

I doubt that’s right. The GOA calendar is off sometimes.
There are a number of sources coming up here which are calling for strict fast that day, so it would seem to depend on the jurisdiction. Besides the GOA website, our wall calendar, and the calendar produced with the supervision of Met Kallistos which the poster in the monachos.net. forum says her priest and parish are following, the OCA parish I often go to also has it as strict fast. Our clergy announced it as such and I’m content to follow what we’ve been told our parish is doing. 🙂

If the jurisdiction does not transfer the Royal Hours liturgical celebration to Friday, then the Royal Hours will be on Saturday or Sunday. Jan 1-4 Gregorian or Jan 14-17 Julian is always Fast-free. Some churches fast on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday Eve of Theophany, but this is outside of Jan 1-4 or Jan 14-17. For the Russian Orthodox, using the Julian Calendar (Theophany January 19, with Vigil on January 18) see these dates:
  • Friday January 18, 2013 - Eve of the Theophany (Kreshchenskyi Sochelnik).- Fast. Food with Oil
  • Saturday January 19, 2013 - Theophany
  • Saturday January 17, 2009 - **Saturday before the Nativity and before the Baptism of Our Lord and God and Saviour Jesus Christ, *Forefeast of the Theophany *- Sviatki. Fast-free
  • Sunday January 18, 2009 - Eve of the Theophany (Kreshchenskyi Sochelnik).- Fast. Food with Oil
  • Monday January 19, 2009 - Theophany
  • Friday January 17, 2014 - Forefeast of the Theophany - Sviatki. Fast-free
  • Saturday January 18, 2014 - *Eve of the Theophany (Kreshchenskyi Sochelnik) *- Fast. Food with Oil
  • Sunday January 19, 2014 - Theophany
