It’s sort of the goal. To be deified or transformed into God’s image is to be perfected into the being that we’re created to be-rather than to just be saved in spite of our sinful selves as some might have it. God has much greater plans for mankind than we could ever imagine-or know enough to want. Union with Him is an aspect of that same goal. And all of that is to start here on earth, even if only fully consummated in the next life.
