We may find that the source language is not that far off the King James.
Very true in many cases.
Paul seemed to make a point to add this sentence for a reason. Most likely, to relieve confusion between the idols problem and the understanding that there are many gods and lords.
A rather novel assumption. I’d be curious to see other commentaries prior to the 19th century on what Paul intended with that sentence.

WhyMe, it seems that you have gone from what you stated was your original intent - that of defending Mormonism - to promoting it. 🤷
Not really. I just got tired of catholics bashing mormons for their beliefs when in fact, the lds get their beliefs from biblical interpretation like all other faiths. They just don’t pull things out of the air. And that was the point that I am trying to make. Of course what I am now getting are interpretations from the catholics on this forum. But that was not the point. All faiths can interprete the sciptures and this is why we have so many christian sects.

We just need to respect interpretations and understand why groups may believe what they believe. 🙂

Which is why Catholics rely on Sacred Tradition for the interpretation of Scripture.

Historical context is fun!

that is your choice… ***

Nope. They didn’t.

I was flipping through my scriptures the other day when I came across these verses in fiirst corinthians chapter 8:

CHAPTER 8

1 Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.
2 And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know.
3 But if any man love God, the same is known of him.
4 As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one.
5 For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,)
6 But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.

It seems that there are many lords and gods. Maybe the Mormons got it right.
Do you have anything in that confuzzled head of yours that thinks it would be a good idea to understand the true meaning of those scriptures? Perhaps, as taught by the Church you claim to be a member of while receiving Communion?

Maybe??? Just a little bit? (Give me some hope here.)

No, it denies belief in idols. It doesn’t apply one way or the other to Mormonism, as Mormons don’t worship idols.

It is not necessary for a false god to be externalized in tangible form for it to be an idol. If one is not worshipping God as He really is, then one is worshipping an idol.

1 Corinthians**
Chapter 8**

1 Now in regard to meat sacrificed to idols: we realize that “all of us have knowledge”; knowledge inflates with pride, but love builds up.

2 If anyone supposes he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know.

3 But if one loves God, one is known by him.

4 So about the eating of meat sacrificed to idols: we know that “there is no idol in the world,” and that “there is no God but one.”

5 Indeed, even though there are so-called gods in heaven and on earth (there are, to be sure, many “gods” and many “lords”),

6 yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom all things are and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things are and through whom we exist.

Whyme, do you understand the context here? Did you read verse 4? Do you see, in verse 5 that “gods” and “lords” are in quotes?

Does that help you to understand that Paul isn’t talking about real “gods” and “lords”, he is talking about the pagan beliefs…as related to his discussion of eating meat that was set out for idols.

Verse 6 clearly states, in contrast to verse 5, that THERE IS ONE GOD.

You can apply this reasoning to any passage that Mormons take, as “proof” of multiple gods. All such passages are an indication of an ERROR of belief, on the part of humans.

From the Hebrews who constantly fell into paganism to the pagans of the Apostle’s era…gods, lords, is talking about PAGAN practices and beliefs.

Only Mormons, in their beyond erroneous beliefs, read about pagan practices and beliefs and teach that they should emulate those practices.

Not really. I just got tired of catholics bashing mormons for their beliefs when in fact, the lds get their beliefs from biblical interpretation like all other faiths.
Ahh, but you see, Catholics and Orthodox do not. We believe that Holy Tradition began before the Scriptures were written (and Scripture itself is part of Holy Tradition) and our beliefs are not limited to what is contained in Scripture. Of course, neither are LDS beliefs as you have additional Scriptures that other Christians do not recognize as such.
They just don’t pull things out of the air. And that was the point that I am trying to make.
I think one of the main charges made against the LDS is that Joseph Smith did exactly that, isn’t it?
Of course what I am now getting are interpretations from the catholics on this forum. But that was not the point. All faiths can interprete the sciptures and this is why we have so many christian sects.
Yes indeed. But how do we determine which interpretation(s) are correct, especially when there are mutually exclusive interpretations?
We just need to respect interpretations and understand why groups may believe what they believe. 🙂
I agree that understanding the “whys” is probably the best thing to hope for. I think respecting the interpretations may be going too far. We can respect individuals, but if we can show that a particular interpretation is false or incoherent, then there really shouldn’t be an obligation to respect it. After all, we all strive towards the truth! 👍

“A psalm of Asaph. God rises in the divine council, gives judgment in the midst of the gods.
‘How long will you judge unjustly and favor the cause of the wicked? Selah
Defend the lowly and fatherless; render justice to the afflicted and needy.
Rescue the lowly and poor; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.’
The gods neither know nor understand, wandering about in darkness, and all the world’s foundations shake.
I declare: ‘Gods though you be, offspring of the Most High all of you,
Yet like any mortal you shall die; like any prince you shall fall.’
Arise, O God, judge the earth, for yours are all the nations.”

- Psalms 82 (NAB)
did you happen to read the footnote on verse one . from the NAB verse psalm 82 verse One;

God rises in the divine council, gives judgment in the midst of the gods.

foot note from NAB on this verse reads :

the gods ; human judges who are “godlike” in their prerogative of establishing justice on the earth

Please really read the Psalm along with the cross referances and footnotes this entire Psalm is talking of those that have set themselves and the Judges of there fellow men that that they shal met the same fate as all men.

thus saith the Lord;

in John 17:3 Jesus addresses his Father, saying, “And this is eternal life, that they know you—the only true God.” in other words there is no other(s)

“‘You are my witnesses,’ says the Lord, ‘and my servant whom I have chosen, that you may know and believe me and understand that I am he. Before me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me’” (Is. 43:10).

Whyme has always promoted Mormonism and trivialized Catholicism.

Whyme has always promoted Mormonism and trivialized Catholicism.
Despite the Whyme’s intentions, he or she has not shown me that anything is correct about the LDS interpretation in the cited verses. Particularly when the attempt was made to use grammar (comma’s/parenthesis) as a support for the interpretation when that grammar did not exist in the original text!

As should you, if you are Catholic.
I worded it badly, I suppose.

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit not separate Persons, in the sense that LDS believe. LDS believe they are separate, ie. they are three divinities. Catholics believe in one God, three Divine consubstantial Persons.

WhyMe is Catholic???

I’ve never seen an indication of Whyme having any interest what so ever in what the Catholic church teaches. Catholic teaching is never discussed by him only LDS teaching. And always in a way that shows warmth and admiration for the LDS teaching as apposed to a coldness and dislike of the Catholic understanding.
