There are many Gods and Lords...maybe the Mormons got it right!

No, it denies belief in idols. It doesn’t apply one way or the other to Mormonism, as Mormons don’t worship idols.
Actually, according to “The Catholic Study Bible,” as used in Catholic schools and colleges, the passage states a monotheistic confession, contrasts that with polytheism, and expresses our relationship with the one God.

I did. I also read the one that mentions Jesus’ use of this psalm to prove that those to whom the word of God is addressed can fittingly be called “gods.” Both of those footnotes show that not everything called a god is an idol, so Mormons can speak of a plurality of gods without being polytheistic idol worshipers.
NO they can not for the meaning of its use in scripture is not the same as what Mormons have applied to it. As shown in the Psalm they were referring to mere men that were acting “godlike”. The Mormons are referring to there actually being other gods. They even misrepresent the Trinity to conform to there Polytheistic beliefs.

Which is why Catholics rely on Sacred Tradition for the interpretation of Scripture.

Historical context is fun!
I know. But many faiths have their own interpretation and base that interpretation on their own tradition. People of different religious traditions can bash each other all day and still only get a headache. 🙂

Do you have anything in that confuzzled head of yours that thinks it would be a good idea to understand the true meaning of those scriptures? Perhaps, as taught by the Church you claim to be a member of while receiving Communion?

Maybe??? Just a little bit? (Give me some hope here.)
You know, Rebecca, that that wasn’t my point. I only wanted to show that mormons also get their ideas from scriptures. Yes, they may interpret them differently than catholics but they can also make a good case for what they believe based on the bible.

On this forum, mormons have been mocked for giving milk before meat to new members or investigators to the mormon church, and yet, it is in the scriptures. And mormons have been mocked for their many gods approach and yet, it is in the KJV according to their interpretation of the scripture.

That was my point.

Whyme has always promoted Mormonism and trivialized Catholicism.
I have never tivialized Catholicism but I have seen mormonism trivialized in this forum.

I am just trying to make some members of this forum, who are antimormon and judgemental, better catholics. 🙂

Despite the Whyme’s intentions, he or she has not shown me that anything is correct about the LDS interpretation in the cited verses. Particularly when the attempt was made to use grammar (comma’s/parenthesis) as a support for the interpretation when that grammar did not exist in the original text!
But you see that is my point. All faiths believe that their interpretations are correct. Mormons trace their beginnings in the apostacy which is foretold in the New Testament according to the lds. Also, in regards to plurality of gods and milk before meat. People have went to war based on their own interpretation of god.

I have never seen you show any support for any Catholic doctrine or dogma. In all cases when it comes to supporting such you beg off on an aside about how unimportant doctrine and dogma are. But when it comes to LDS doctrine you are adamant and tenacious in your defense. You do not defend Catholicism and you do defend Mormonism. Which is trivialized?

Dear WhyMe

It has been the mission (well Documented) of Christ Church to spread His gospel for 2000 years. The Church with the Holy Spirit has guided us to the truth, to God, as it is the Mission commissioned by Christ Himself. You are advocating Heresy in the highest degree here below, actual blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, against God. You need prayers. With all sincerity, love and humility. The interpretations I gave earlier are from the Church, from the One body of Christ, His Church, His Diary.
As to Catholics Bashing the Mormon Church you need to read your own leaders interpretations of it. All of Christianity has been bashed by the Mormons, the very Core to our Doctrine Given by Christ Himself, our Creed has been called an abomination, our Lord has been called a Whore as we are of His body. But in our faith we can still love the Mormons because we who know our faith understand sin and the battle that lies before each of us. We know how the beam in one’s eye is removed as we have the Sacrament of confession. Until you can face your own sin and embrace it the Christian way you will never get it. You need to go to the Alter and gaze upon the Cross, then I would suggest spending some time in the Most Holy Sacrament Chapel

We just need to respect interpretations and understand why groups may believe what they believe. *

whyme, the errors of Mormonism are “not just another interpretation”. They are severe errors that warp truth into something other. In some cases, warping truth into indications that there becomes a belief that a “lie by ommission” is not a lie.

This is serious stuff whyme. It is not a case of whether one prefers their walls painted blue or tan, and either is ok because personal preference is at the highest level of importance.

Correcting error, speaking against it, is not mocking belief. It is placing Truth at the highest level of importance.

Truth is not relative to interpretation. When interpretation of God’s words are warped, the absolutely known Truth about God is lost, and one is left worshiping, knowing, a false god.

This is not “ok”, in any sense you can come up with.

that is what is so scary about any “church” other than the true One. . Actually a person can take any book of philosophy… & make it mean just about anything he/she wants it to mean… make a whole religion out of it. It is even easier to do with the Bible because there ARE passages that are not easily understood, which is why bk of Peter says scripture is not up for private interpretation.

so… killing whole towns, men, women and children is in the Bible aslo… Does that mean God wants us to destroy cities known for their sinners (San Fran, NY… Portland, OR)??

Just goes to show all over again how we need an infallible church hierarchy to tell us what the proper interpretation of the Word is…

Catholic born and breed! :tiphat:
Then why are you belittling Catholic doctrine over on the MAAD board. There was really no need for you to slam Catholicism on that thread everyone else was staying on target and discussing the issue from an LDS point of view. But you had to stick in your dig on Catholicism.

Just curious if you’re only here to correct people on LDS doctrine, why are you on MAAD snarking on Catholic doctrine?

WhyMe, I think that’s probably not that good of a scripture to explain eternal progression. I personally prefer
Rev 1:5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,
6 And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.
But it’s hard to establish much from brief snippets of scripture. It’s a fundamental philosophical difference in the how priesthood leads to exaltation. Mormons expect everyone to hold the pristhood and through that authority (which is based on faithful and obedience) to be exalted–to become kings and priests to God.

The Catholic persepctive I really can’t understand. They have a lay priesthood but aren’t involved in church government. It sounds too weak to exalt but like I said, I don’t understand it fully.

And the other question eternal progression has to do with is what are the eternities made up of? Is it a time of rest or struggle and achievement? If we are truly kings and priests to the most high, what do we do for Him? What work does He give to His kings and Priests? And all this is very speculative. I think it’s just a matter of the LDS speculating more on it than the RC.

Never have I slammed catholic doctrine on the MAAD board. But nice try creating a strawman. 🙂

Here is my last post on MAAD about catholics and birthcontrol. I see no slamming but was giving a little critique of the mormon position as it has been changing.

My point was a simple one: the mormons have their own interpretation of scripture and that is why I posted this thread. Sure if a person is a catholic he or she can say: the mormons got it wrong! And if a person is a mormon, he or she can say: the catholics got it wrong. Such is the vagueness of the bible and why we have so many sects each professing their own christianity.

Not really. Someone made a claim and I am responding. My post is there for all to see. My post is not anticatholic. And I do not hide under other idenities. I am neither misguided or a liar. But I see no reason to allow the religion of my daughers to be dragged through the mud as it has been on this forum. And so, I defend the faith of my daughters. And I have no qualms about mormonism. The lds people are decent and by and large behave wonderfully christian.

WhyMe
There is no question as to how the Catholic Church interprets the Scriptures. It has always been others who have misinterpreted them for their own self gain. As many have shown you with your original post. You can’t take for instance made in the “Image” of God and just assume this is our physical image, that He was once a man unless you are very unlearned in language, history and context. Or when Paul spoke about celestrial and the glory of the terrestrial and come to the conclusion of him speaking about different heavens. Proper interpretation is what the Church of Christ is. This is why Christianity has has survived 2000 years. By interpreting Scripture correctly through the guidance of the Holy Spirit, to bring Christ to as many souls that would open their hearts and listen in all humility and surrender to Him. You have another agenda WhyMe and who knows what it is. I believe you are an instrument of confusion, not sure if you are confused though. I hope for you sake you are. I am not, I have come out of Mormonism into the light of Christ, into His Church.
