There are no Christian "priests" or "Pope" in the New Testament

Why do people waste our time with these threads that are clearly posted REPEATEDLY out of blind ignorance? Go do some research … open up a Catechism to see what the Catholic Church teaches on Sacred Scripture, remembering that the Bible was copied, preserved and canonized EXCLUSIVELY by the Catholic Church.

Wake up.

Hi 🙂

I think that
Episkipos means bishop in English as he overseer of a diocese.
Presyteros mean priest (elder, father) in English.

SHW
Clearly they are two different offices in the NT. They are different Gk. words, and have different responsibilities. I was suprised to read that he does not recognize any difference. He believes there are only two offices, pastor, and deacon. 🤷

Bastoune, getting frustrated with the ignorant rantings of our separated brethren will not bring them into wisdom. If they were willing to read and understand the catechism, they would not be posting statements like the one in the OP. If you believe it is a waste of time, why are you on the thread? The purpose of CAF is to address erroneous statements such as this.

What it comes down to is a Sola Scriptura argument. The simple fact is that Sola Scriptura is not supported by the Scriptures! Next question please.
You know what… next time someone tells me to “prove it using only scripture” I’m going to explain to them the logical fallacy of self verification, and then demand that they prove sola scriptura using NO scripture whatsoever. ::chuckles:: we’ll see how they handle that.

Actually I have done simialr to this often with evangelicals.
I have challenged them to demonstrate to me the validity and authority of the Bible without using quotes from the Bible. It usually results in my being accused of having a low regard for scripture/the bible.🤷

Peace
James

We see the same questions over and over because new forum members arrive with the same old baggage.

That’s okay…we have a lot of folks to educate, and patience is a virtue.

Amen! I would answer the same question a thousand times if it helps people.

I, personally, enjoy debate. It only gets tedious when the person you’re speaking with refuses to acknowledge reason or even the possibility that he is wrong.

Actually you just described the person the OP quoted. 😛

I used to do this little question/answer experiment until I had a large enough sample group for my taste. I would ask “If God appeared before you right now and told you you were wrong, that the X denomination had it wrong, and that the Catholic church was the one true church, what would you do or say?”

A large portion of protestants (a VERY large portion, actually), would respond with “that’s just not possible.” No matter how many times i would assert this was just a “what if” kind of question, the answer would stay the same: it’s just not possible for us to be wrong…

The funny thing is that the majority of catholics responded differently. The response tended toward (for example, using baptists), “well, if I were told by God right now that the baptists were right, I suppose I’d call one of my friends and ask what time baptist services start.”

The major indicator, to me, is an overt willingness to seek out truth, even if it seems contradictory to what we believe, and a humility that we may be wrong and only the Holy Spirit can guide us. It says something about pride when a person can’t even CONSIDER what they would do if GOD HIMSELF told them they were wrong.

Of course there are Christian priests. We are all supposed to be priests. Yet sadly, not all Christians act like priests in the way that they live their lives…

This is why I devote my life to Christ as though I were a priest, because that’s what I’m supposed to be. Holy, sanctified, set apart as an example for all the world to look upon. If people see you living a clean life and worshipping God in humility and grace, they will know something is different about you.👍

Unfortunately for you, unless you have been ordained , all you are doing is pretending to be “priestly”

The Holy Ghost has ordained me a priest. Why should I care what man thinks about me?

“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light;” - 1 Peter 2:9

“And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.” - Revelation 1:6

According to the Apostles, I am a priest of the Most High God. And besides that, I’m just as chaste as any Catholic priest.

This is what happens when people take single “proof texts” way out of context. What about the laying on of hands for Apostolic Succession? (See the naming of Matthias in Acts as the successor of Judas Isacariot) Without sanction of Holy Mother Church, simply saying “I am a priest” means nothing. I too am chaste, but I am no priest.

I do not claim to be an Apostle, so no worries there. As for being a priest. The Scriptures are clear that if you are a true follower of Christ and belong to Him, you ARE a priest of the Lord God. Now if you wish to say that the Scriptures are wrong, that’s up to you.

P.S. If Christ calls me a priest, I don’t care what “Mother Church” calls me. Mother Church isn’t my God.

Hi Crimson, of course we are all priests, but that’s not what St. Paul is talking about in this verse:

“But I have written very boldly to you on some points so as to remind you again, because of the grace that was given me from God, to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles, ministering as a priest the gospel of God, so that my offering of the Gentiles may become acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:15-16)

Notice he says to the Roman Christians “I… minister as a priest” - he doesn’t say to them “We minister as priests”. He’s talking about an ordained priesthood, which we see in “the laying on of hands” of an apostolic authority (Acts 6:6).

And this dual priesthood, for lack of a better term, was not new:

"“Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.” (Exodus 19:5-6)

And of course the Israelites had the Levites as their ordained priests.

All followers of Christ are to be priest, prophets and kings. This is scriptural. However, there are also specifically ordained priests (1 Timothy 5:17) who anoint the sick (James 5:14-15), hear confessions (Matthew 9:8) and hold the Mass (“do this in remembrance of me”).

No, but it does reflect the beliefs and practices of the early church. So, if there were priests in the role they are today, and a “pope” there is an expectation that such a record might be found there.
I can’t find “choir director” or “pastor” or “youth pastor” or “assistant pastor” or “secretary” or for that matter the “janitor”. Good grief, is this the best critical thinking some of you have out there? The Bible is NOT a dictionary and that was the best answer going. You cannot do a Bible word search for everything Christian and if the “word” is not found, declare the idea to be invalid. Leaders have different names…ours predated yours by a long shot but they are still leaders.🤷

Technically, pastor is in there I believe.

And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, - Ephesians 4:11

That is a translation from Greek I believe and you could call them priests too…I think the Greeks do but the point was and is…just because you can’t find the word in the Bible is not evidence of it’s invalidity.
