1 Clement nowhere demonstrates a single bishop - his name is not even in the epistle. Rather, it was from the elders, not from the bishop of Rome.

The letter says it is from “the church of Rome”. It doesn’t say it is from “the elders” or “not from the bishop.” The only evidence for its author is tradition, which says the author was Pope Clement I.

The letter indicates there was no bishop of Rome at the time.

In what sentence?

If you read it you will realize it does not contain the sort of language popes used later on. It is exhortation, not commandment.

It is commandment:

“If, however, any shall disobey the words spoken by Him through us, let them know that they will involve themselves in transgression and serious danger.”

“Joy and gladness will you afford us, if you become obedient to the words written by us and through the Holy Spirit root out the lawless wrath of your jealousy according to the intercession which we have made for peace and unity in this letter.”

A generous application of the ignore feature is truly critical…especially against persons who are given to making demands – or, as you say, are given to making insults. It saves one from wasting time that should be devoted to worthy and deserving interactions.

One trusts that moderators monitor threads to deal with boorish behaviour.

I find it a sad indictment of the Catholic Answers Forum that moderator intervention is so often necessary. It was certainly never that way in my lecture hall…but then my students were intelligent and well-mannered, which is something too often not in evidence here. That is also sad.

But no one ever told me, that in my own home, and with the people I care deeply about, that I was entering into a very very difficult conflict just by my choice, my conviction, to be Catholic.

Apart from that, and having read the evidence, I would personally call this Puritan court-room closed. If I chose to Ignore people, I would certainly not turn it into this thread. I would just do what I said.

I’m sorry this wasn’t a smooth transition for you.

My wife and I were married 20 yrs before she converted. And in my absurd style, when she said after 20 years as a Protestant, I think I’m ready to be Catholic, I said to her, what’s your rush?

Not meant to minimize anything here with some levity, of course I was delighted she made that choice. Would I have liked it much sooner? Absolutely. But it worked out. All I’m saying, I’ve been there, and I hear you.

The Greatest Commandment

The hierarchy of love is to put God first and always first. Then love your neighbor/family/friends, as yourself. Jesus is saying, don’t get that backwards.

As I’m seeing this, you’re doing what Jesus said to do. Love Him first, THEN love everyone else as you love yourself.

Don’t underestimate how God works in this.
