I believe that every Catholic who is commited to their faith ought to have great reverance for the Blessed Mother, and put this into practice in what ways they deem to be best. However, it is well known that the Rosary is a most powerful prayer, and one especialy praised and reccomended by the Church and Our Lady herself, so I most definately believe that this is the greatest devotion to the Blessed Virgin and one that should be prayed frequently by all the faithful.I think your question is too broad to be answered well. Is there an acceptable number of Catholics that would satisfy you if they downplay it, and how can you measure it?
I don’t believe that Montfort’s writings are official church teaching; I seem to recall that these sorts of devotions are optional for Catholics, and for good reason. You seem to imply all Catholics should be very highly Marian - whatever that means. Do you think all Catholics should say the Rosary daily? What would be a satisfactory level of Marian devotion to you?
Protestants deny the Marian dogmas and have a very low view of the Blessed Mother in comparison to the Church. But what should their opinions matter here?I think you will agree that Marian devotion among Protestants is much less than among Catholics or Orthodox, and less than it was several hundred years ago. Perhaps Protestants may have some valid critiques of Marian theology that you should consider. Perhaps that critique is shared by some Catholics. The Catholic church is not uniform on this matter, after all.
As for protestant (and some “Catholic”) criticisms of the Blessed Virgin, I prefer to remain close to the constant teachings of the Church and the reccomendations of innumerable Popes and Saints that devotion to the Blessed Virgin the best way to grow in our spiritual relationship with Christ.
